Fitting the damn thing! (spoiler)

Ok heres the bloody story so far..

I got that Terminator spoiler (i think possibly also known as the INAC one) had it for a while now and just today took it to the body shop to get it painted.

However, they say there's no way it will fit on the car as theres nothing to hold it on (you canonot bond on glass and the screw holes drill directly through it also)...

However, I'VE SEEN PEOPLE WITH IT ON!!!!!!!!!!

How do I attach it? and does anyone know anywhere near london which can do it? for less than 80?

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE!!!!!!

Are the cars you've seen it on HLX models or above? (Come with factory spoiler). Just a thought, could you get the rear glass from a HLX or HGT with holes already in it and use that to replace yours? Don't know how expensive that'll be?!?

It makes no sense guys! INAC make these spoilers not only as replacments but to go on where they havent been before....why sell a spoiler that doesnt fit?

it *is* possible to drill through glass - takes patience and time tho and obviously the cost if it goes wrong is a new back window, but if you were considering replacing that anyway.....

all depends on what size of hole you need

not dear to buy the bits and you'd need a good drill to tho

On no condition drill through a Bravo back window. It causes a weak point which will fail under pressure and crack the glass, even if drilled correctly. Lets have no more numpty's knackering their cars eh?

i did think of that on the toilet last night (i do all my best thinking there)
the whole problem of the spoiler causing down force which is then applied directly onto the glass is bad
unless you strengthened it from the inside but that just seems like an awful lot of work to get a spoiler fitted

there *must* be an easier way

The amount of down force on a Bravo with one of those spoilers is about the same as an egg shell! The problem is the unit flex on a hatch lid. The glass makes up some 30% of the ridgidity and any flaw will be exposed very quickly. I have drilled glass myself when I was "in" on some of the special vehicles to fit various bits of kit and one of the areas that always failed was Range Rover rear screens for this very reason.

In the end I sent it back, never been brave enough to try again since, however there is aparently one which goes through the metal bit around the edge, no one knows which one tho :)

yeah, but that 120 put me off (the other one was only 65)
I did want the Kit Car one (like a WRC spoiler, the one baby has) but aparently that is a replacement for the HLX one? (ie uses the same screw holes?) Or does it stick on?

Incidently, if drilling glass makes it weak, why are the hlx ones not weak to start with? (or are they tempered or whatever afterwards?)

I beleive the HLX/HGT glass units are made with the holes in them rather than making the hols in them afterwards. I would therefore assum that the holes would be "perfect", this would not be the case if you drilled it as this would cause some sort of microscopic fracturing. Sounds reasable to me anyway!!!

heres one for you all!!!

i've got a 1996 bravo 1.8i 16v hlx

as you probably know these already have holes in the back window for the rear spoiler but i want to replace it with the carzone rear spoiler which bonds to the glass.
so do i have to get the rear window off a lower model or is there any way of filling the holes in.

any info would be grateful.

thanks
tim

Oo er! I am sure auto windshields or similar could do a bullet repair but why not sell your existing one and swap the rear screen out at the same time?
