I picked up last night a Y plate 1.2 16v Fiat Brava, I didn't even know such a thing existed, and by all accounts they only did them on Y and 51 plate, so they are not hugely common (unless someone want to correct me).

The diff is going in the gearbox, you can feel it snatching.

I'm wondering what my options are. I have a 1.6 16v gearbox from an X plate Bravo lying about, but I don't know if its a straight fit, or if it is, will the ratios be too long for the 1.2 16v engine meaning it robs the car of what little power its got?

If the box is no good or won't fit, is it possible to swap out the diff from the 1.6 box and put it into the 1.2 box?

If thats no good, will a 1.2 8v MK2 Punto gearbox be a suitable replacement, or would it have to come from a 16v model?

Any help would be appreciated.

Someone mentioned putting a 1.4 12v gearbox in there, but these are equally thin on the ground.

So basically, what are my options please. (y)

1.2 engines only. Th 1.4 and 1.6 take a tripod joint, the 1.2s have couplings. 1.2 8v and 16v are a straight fit. Best stick with the 16v box though

The 1.2 was available in those cars between 1998 and 2001 so it is not uncommon at all (y)

So a Punto 1.2 8v MK2 box will or won't fit the Brava?

I'm surprised to hear these aren't uncommon, i've never heard of one before yesterday.... learn something new! :D

yeh the punto box will fit but ratios will be a tad different.

any
1.1 8v
1.2 8v
1.2 16v
1.4 8v
1.4 16v

box will fit from all punto mk1,2 grande,500,bravo,stilo,seicento,cinquecento,panda so there are plenty about.

does brava box have same mountings as a mk1 or mk2 punto? because they are not the same

It has mk2 mountings but uses the mk1 holes, hence you can use either a mk1 box or mk2 box. Heres a very common pic of 2 boxes I have, mk1 on left, mk2 on right....

This is what I need to know. I'm not overly au fait with Fiats in general, so don't want to go get a gearbox only to find it won't fit, and i'm assuming MK1 Punto gearboxs are different to MK2, hence the question about will a MK2 Punto 1.2 8v box fit because I can get ahold of one quickly and cheaply.

Yes, either mk1 or mk2 will fit, both 8v and 16v

Fantastico news, means I can get the little Brava back on the road tomorrow then as its a bit nerve wracking to drive at the moment, expecting the diff to lock up at speed!
