I have a JTD 105 ELX when I start it it will run for a while then just stop dead the engine still turns over but it wont start if i leave it for about ten minutes it will run again for a while then stop dead again anyone have any ideas as to what it might be

Could be a number of things, but from the description I would be looking at the fuel pump. Does the engine warning light come on and all power disappear at the same time?

Mmmmm is sounding like a pump :( Had few puntos like this & all were pumps, lets hope not eh unless its under warranty of some kind!
sadly not under warranty the car is in a fiat dealers hands and Im now getting a feeling of impending doom. how much are we talking for them to do the pump

Please..........I dont want to give you that kind of bad news!!!

Fingers crossed for you thats its something simple (y)
Dealer might need your car for few days to pinpoint fault, guaranteed it is fine until you drive it away :(

It can be another thing but the pump, which is fas less expensive. I am from portugal so i dont know the name of this part in english but direct translation is " Superior Neutral " or in portuguese (may you have a friend who knows portuguese "Ponto Morto Superior ( PMS sensor )"

I would really like to help you better but i honnestly dont know how to name this part in english... try asking a portuguese friend about this.

Well Morto is dead, Porto is point, and I agree it is most likely to be the TDC sensor or RPM sensor as many people call it. Its a common problem on engines that have covered 60K plus. What happens is that the sensor goes open circuit when it gets hot. (the sensor is at the back of the engine near the bell housing bolted in the crankcase). If its allowed to cool down then the vehicle will eventually restart. The jtd has two sensors, a rpm/tdc sensor and a phase sensor or cam position sensor, it uses both to work out which injector to fire and at what point. If the tdc/rpm sensor goes open circuit then the engine stops because there is no reference point to work from. From memory the sensors are around £25 and easy to change from under the car.

Only problem with the resistence check is the plug is in an awkward place at the rear of the engine up by the alternator, error code is stored but because when the engine refires the ecu cant see the fault the efi light stays off. Error code stored is rpm/phase synchronicity error or something like that, (i am very old and forgetful), basically the ecu compares the signal from the phase sensor and rpm sensor and sees something isnt right but cant decide exactly what. By the way T, found your keys yet?
