ok, i love the bravos! i have had 3 in 4 months, and all i have had is engine trouble.....

ive finally found the bravo of my dreams, a black bravo, 2001, abrath kitted etc....1.2
after about 500km it was fine, i got the valves replaced, seals gaskets belts pumps etc all replaced so it would be a "fresh sort of motor"
but engine has no power, (cylinders 1+4)pistion rings,
lambda sensor, coils, sump leaking etc....so many things!

i want to replace the engine, but i actually cant find the same engine in the whole of ireland! the engine number ends in "5000",

and i can only find the more common engine, in the 2000 year bravos and below.... so i bought one.

im wondering if anyone can help me, and explain if i can fit that engine into it? will everything line up ok? etc plz help..... i just want to drive my car :(

We have 5 Bravos here and 4 gave engine trouble :p

You need a fly by wire engine, yes? Catalyst is at the front? I have 3 of those 1.2 engines lying about but 2 of them have the wrong cylinder head and the 3rd is stuffed.... Consider the 1.4 16v? It will require a remap to work right but it has all the same connections as the later 1.2....

It will fit, but it requires alot of work. I have a Punto sporting with a 97 engine from a mk1 installed, the cam sensor wont fit, the inlet manifold studs had to be removed and a new exhaust system had to be made up specially for that car including a new cat. It works well but it is alot of work...

but in all fareness, i seem to have the same problem as you had..(keep trying to find the perfect fit)

ive spent so much money on repairing engines etc, so now i just want to buy an engine that works properly! :p

do u know anywere in ireland that would have a 2001 1.2 (5000 - is the last four digits of the engine model.) as far as i know that engine model is extremly rare! altough i have 2 bust engines of that type, i cant seem to find another anywhere!

I have one of those engines in my 99 Bravo, talk about having things the wrong way round :p

Seriously tho, I see your from dundalk... Theres a scrapyard outside maynooth, quite a big one. Now there are no fly by wire Bravos or Bravas but there are plenty of Stilos and they are all the non facelifted model 02-04 (last time I checked anyway) I do remember at least one of them had a 1.2, this engine will fit its also a fly by wire setup :)
 
ohh cool! yea ill check them out!

curently my mecjanic is attemoting to fit the 00 engine.
time will tell!

didnt know stilos had a similar engine thats handy!

ill keep you posted on this to tell you how my engine swap is going....

ok so the engine fits perfect and everything connects but the can sensor wont fit or somthing.....so that engine is usless i guess....

m20b25, is that stilo engine the same as the later fiat engine in everyway> would they have the same engine model number? thanks

Did mention there was no place for it! The car will work without this part though if you were stuck :)

In 2000 the range was updated to meet stage 3 EOBD regulations and no 1.2 16v's were made after that with a cable throttle. The engine might have different numbers and mounts but the important thing is its the same engine (y)
 
ok so what ive done now, after nearly 2 weeks,.

is taken the 2000 engine, and fitted the head from my 2001 engine with sensors etc
hopefullt this will work :)

just another day r so before its finished ! :p

dropping the engine back in today!

Surely if you had a straightforward head gasket failure (fairly common) the easiest thing would have been to simply fix that problem. Unless the head is damaged or warped, but you seem to have re-used your old one anyway.

What's the advantage of using the bottom end of an older, scrapped car?

The bottom ends of the 2 engine versions are different, the later ones have an extension section between the block and the sump. The other way to tell of course is the fact that the later cylinder heads have a cable fitted on top (for the cam sensor).

Those engines here are as rare as rocking horse poo and very often its much cheaper to buy the whole engine instead of a head gasket set, skim and pressure test etc. A few years ago I got my Seicento with a blown head. I got the head done up with all the gaskets etc and it cost €250. Then when I was putting the car back together I was cleaning up the block and found out the pistons were in bits so I decided to get some new ones. Cutting a long story short I ended up buying a low milage engine complete for €100 and just using that instead :p

As for complications, I have a 01 Punto Sporting with a 97 block, extention and a 99 head. The blocks are totally different eg theres no where to put in the knock sensor, cam sensor and it takes the bigger oil filter. I got it to fit and it works perfect (y) Dont let anyone say it cant be done, if theres a will theres a way!!
