What should be the normal cost to pay on a Fiat Brava cambelt change,I have been quoted £250/300  is this a realistic figure ?or too much?

Many thanks in advance

Hi ya

I had quotes for £130 to £180 for a 1.2 16v, which are not to bad but then I find they are not changing the Tensioner or the drive belts, even though I have them already, price is for JUST the cam belt.
So make sure the tensioner is included in the price, my argument was you have to remove the drive belts to get to the cam belt, so just put the new belts back on instead of the old ones. Oh no extra cost for fitting new parts. Basically make sure you know what you are getting fitted.
One garage in Rhyl wanted £180 [+VAT] but price went to £230 for fitting new drive belts. £50 for sliding 2 belts out of cardboard sleeves. Alternator and power steering pump will already be loose from removal of old belts??????????????

dont go there again then they nutters, name and shame ;)

Unbelievable.

If you know someone that owns a garage or anyone who might know someone - go there. The cambelt itself is probably £10.

My uncle charged me £20 to fit it, including cost, and got a ride in a Mitsubishi GTO which was nice. I really didn't know garages could get away with charging so much - although the job does take an hour or two once you've got to the part and waited for the new one to be delivered.

I'd have thought local dealers may be able to do it cheaper - although we had a difficulty in sourcing the part so a FIAT approved garage would probably find that a bit easier.

garage in harwich just tried to charge my mate £650 for an 8v punto coz the belt had gone, they said they will have to strip engine to check for damage, quick phone call from me and its now 1 hour labour + price of belt kit, its his works car and they are a mental health trust charity that gets all thier cars serviced at that place and they still try it on, they said to me oh thans for telling us we never knew it was a safe engine,

It's really not on charging such a huge price - especially for a car used by people who work for charities.

Surely you could buy an engine for cheaper.

:(

havent had mine done but asked my local garage (swansea) and was told £80 ..... this was to include belt tensioner and labour (this on an 80sx)

hallo to y'al.id like to say to crapcarbuyer that 80 bucks is very cheap.i got mine done not that long ago,the belt wos bout 15 sheets an the belt tensioner cost me 65 notes and thats not includin man hours?.the hours to do this job in like most of the people said: all depends on the model!!

Thanks to you all

The only two garages who can do this is the main Fiat dealer and an independant, difference in cost £30 detween £320 and £350 the later figure being the dealer!!

Any other options ? all my independant contacts anre in fear due to the specialist tools needed for the 1.6v engine :bang:

Thanks Dave i live not far from Stourbridge in the West Midlands

Mine has just gone on the way home... bloody annoying. The engine doesn't start, but my Dad [a mechanic] doesn't think there is any engine problem.. Brittania breakdown have said its the cambelt. Its getting picked up in the morning so I'll let you all know how much its gonna cost. If its a fortune I'm gonna spew..

I've already got an Abarth kit ready to be fitted & new suspension.. this is the last thing I need when I'm tryna sort these out all ready

hey mate,

I'm in a 1.8 hlx.. the 16 valver. The garage it got taken to today have said that they don't have the correct tools to sort it out. So they put it on the wagon and took it down to a neighbouring garage. I'm supposed to get an update in the morning. Fingers crossed... i was only doing around 25mph at the time of the belt going. I was reassured today that this was better than being at 70mph on the motorway. Lol.
