Technical Fixing My 1.4 Bravo Engine Misfire

hi i have jus sat n read through your thread and i must say its very good m8 detailed informative. anyways i have a bravo on a 98 plate and jus the other day pulled up outside home notices a trail of oil luckly it had ocured as i got home other wise id bin stuckat work no1 wants tht lol neways i left a bowl over night to catch the remaining oil completly missed bowl not very nice road outside now lol after inspecting my engine i noticed tht a bolt had snaped on casing which covers my cam belt after a few grulling trys i finally got the snaped screw out via drilling it out n replacing it luckly is was the bootom front screw so i was able to feed a nut n bolt through not pretty but ya cnt c it n it does the job so i thought after replaceing cver topping up my oil turned over the engine n imdeatly running trickle in to the bowl it appears to be coming from aboth the sump or behind the aux belt cog ul have to excuss my lamens but im not a mechanic but im learning n trying lol om not sure wat my problem is but iv order a complete et of gasket seal and plan to replace them wud this be the way togo after reading ur thread im uncertain now to scrap it in do the work or drop a 1.6 in n replace the 1.4 completely please could u help.

after more inspection iv come to a better less work n expence conclusion of it jus being the crank seal be hind the aux pully thats connected to the block iv com to this conclusion because of the way and direction the oil leaks out fort as first it was escaping out the cam belt cover which idealy could do with replace if u could help with tht also where i can get one from. il keep loking but like u iv had the weather against me lol im hoping tht this is al it is i no tht the cam beltn aux belt will have to b removed but is this as simple as am hoping ?

the belts are easy to replace and you can do it without any special fiat tools.
the problem is with that seal.. can't help you there.

you can get the aux belt off removing one of the wheels it spins on.. there is one that has a single bolt ( belive it's a 15-16 mm)
and the cam belt is even simpler .. it has a tensioner that realeles tension after you untihten one bolt.
mounting them bach.. is relativley easy..
will post if necesary.

Hi Cheezy

Both shaft oil seals can be bought from Fiat for a few pounds, the sump is sealed with silicone gasket Loctite 5910.

If its the camshaft oil seal thats quite easy to change, but you have to take the camshaft sprocket off to get the new seal on, it pushes in by hand.

The crank shaft oil seal is much more difficult, the fit is really tight and I had to press the new seal in with a press. You would have to take the crank shaft sprocket off which is tightened to 360nm and is a left hand thread. In my experience I would say the only option is removing the oil pump and changing the seal on a work bench, if you do this you will also need a oil pump gasket (Fiat are cheap) and the sump will need resealing. If you have to take the sump off I had trouble with a driveshaft in the way of a bolt and couldnt get it off on the car.

If the cambelt and tensioners need doing you may aswell do them at the same time.

Back to the original thread. Ilsonemo has found the engine problem. It was the valve steam oil seals. I had the valve guides and valve steam's checked by a local engine machine shop they offered to fit the valve steam oil seals and drop the valves in while they had the head. It looks like they pushed the valves through unprotected damaging the seals as the sultan suggested.

If id known it was the valve seals I would have definatly kept the car and changed them, it is not the biggest job in the world.

id get one from a scrap yard for £5 or less. If you go to your local Fiat dealer and just speak to someone at the parts desk they will be able to give you a price and order any parts you want.

cheers turns out my sump and rocker gaskets need replacing to when i get my car running smooth again  mayb lol il ring round scrapys n fetch door handle etc b on road soon fingers crossed ..:bang:

Any videos of the running engine, i'd very much like to see how a new fresh engine compares to my old one...

Who would have guessed? (sarcastic)

I asked if he could have posted some video of the engine running at the time of the build.
