Hi everyone,

I've just bought a 2002 1.2 sx 16v Bravo which I like already,
except for the fuel consumption!

It's doing between 20 and 25mpg on a run! I don't drive fast or
rev too high. The car drives fine and the temperature is rock solid
halfway up the scale after a couple of miles.

Anyone have any ideas what is causing the poor mpg?

Do I need to reset the ECU? I think a boy racer may have been
a previous owner!

Thanks all for any help!

Nick

Hi, I had a 1.2 80sx. Very poor consumption from yours. If you disconnect the battery and leave it for a while the ecu will reset when the battery is reconnected and then learn your driving style over the space of about, IIRC, 100 miles. That said the economy you are experiencing sounds a little more drastic. Easy things first is to check tyre pressures as this will drastically reduce economy due to the size/output of your engine not having the muscle to overcome little things. That said I loved mine, towed a trailer with a bike on it from Bristol to Ayr and back and averaged 42 MPG at 60-70 motorway cruising, nippy around town and handled well.

The exhaust isn't blowing. I've just changed the air filter. Not sure what difference the fuel filter would make to fuel economy? I also changed the plugs which were black and sooty. Does this indicate it's running rich? May have to take it to Fiat to be diagnosed.

I also checked the tyre pressures and for brakes binding. Apart from the fule economy the car is great! And I'm always driving below 3500rpm until the cambelt has been done.

Wow thats pretty poor, My 1.2 16v formula keeps to around 42mpg generally i rag it around too!
Your figures are poorer than the HGT!

I did some things which helped. I checked the tyre pressures on the 15" alloys, they were all 25 psi so I put them all up to 32 psi. Second, I reset
the ECU by disconnecting the battery for half an hour, and have changed the air filter and spark plugs. The old ones were okay but fairly sooty.

Result is I'm now getting 39mpg! :D

I agree with Steve, here is a photo of mine at the services next to the San Gottardo tunnel. I was towing my bike back from Greece not hanging about and still got over 42mpg. On other trips to and from Greece without the trailer I get 46 mpg cruising at around 80 to 85.
Have you had an emissions test? That will confirm it is running rich although the sooty plugs already suggest that.
