Hello Folks,

I've been checking the forums to seek an answer to a certain problem, namely my engine temp takes a good 15 minutes to come to mid way on the gauge and if the weather is cooler than say 10 degrees and I'm travelling at speed the engine temp drops, (it has gone so low as to make the engine management light to come on)...It would seem like the Thermostat is stuck / sticking open. To that end I intend to replace the thing.

The car, a Brava X reg ELX 1.6 has a ridiculously placed stat and housing and whilst I'm not a total wazzock knowing which end of a Hammer to hit the thing with ;) any guidance regarding possible pitfalls will be appreciated.

I'm thinking...Nice warm day, (cold spell should clear by next weekend!), Battery tray out, remove old stat/housing, screw temp sensor in new thermostat, replace with new stat and housing, drain coolant, replace with fresh... Bingo.

What size Jubilee clips for re fixing pipe work? Any sealant required before fixing pipes? Will it be simpler to garage it in the Kingston on Thames area?

Many thanks

that isnt fair, its easy to get to.

dont forget to bleed cooling system after, but other than that you're right. you dont really need to remove the battery or battery tray.

reuse original clips, no sealant needed.

a haynes manual makes life easier. it explains everything step by step.

Was that a hint jug? :)

As if by magic... it mysteriously appears. Brava/o 1.6 Engine and cooling system sections of the manual for download if required.

One section shows how to remove the thermostat housing, the other how to bleed the system.

Dave.

Thank you Jug,

I'll reapraise the positioning after having a bash..;). I'm searching for something wooden to touch in the hope is goes trouble free.

I did look for a Haynes but there was not one for my particular model. I think the Brava manual goes to W reg and I dont know if they're identical specs for both engines. Maybe I'll re-aquaint myself with the local library again.

And Dave, thanks for those PDF links, could turn out to be a lifesaver..

I'll let you know how it goes

Progress report...

It's a bugger...

I had Battery tray floating in position, ECU, removed and disconnected, a couple of air pipes outta the way, just about see bolts to Stat housing, notice the clips used around existing pipes are a pig to free and when comparing the new housing I noticed I have has an extra hole in it...adjcent to the temp sensor hole....DOH! Moment. whether I can screw a bung/cap and seal it off I dont know.

So I put it all back together (the light was fading) and may attempt again soon...With jubille clips of all sizes.. and a cork!

Regards Folks
Greame

to free and refit the original clips you need to use a pair of clip pliers. your local motor factor should have the correct type.

the 2nd hole is odd.
