and can tell me where the earthing points should be under the bonnet, also the colour of the signal cable that bolts to the alternator.

cheeeeeerrrrss

The Haynes is not vey helpful. It lists a total of 9 earth points but does not give exact locations. 5 of these may interest you: Battery, left and right front and 2 for the electronic ignition ( the last 2 vary according to OEM fit so any car will only have 4 populated) All wires to earth are black so that may help.
A red wire goes to B+ on the alternator (this goes to the starter and from there to the battery still red) and a grey/black to the charging warning light from D+. Earthing is via the body.

there are a number of earthing points in the engine bay.

the negative from the battery earths to the chassis leg and then down to the gearbox on the right hand front if you are looking into the engine bay.

there is another one in the same place on the opposite side on the chassis leg.

the abs system (if fitted) has an earth point on the right hand suspension turret and the back of the engine.

the wires connected to my altenator are red and black :)

Thanks,
Ry

thanks everyone, and ta for the offer Helz :)

Am down in St Annes though instead of up there! Got the car running now though, there is an earth that came out of the loom near the 'small' alternator cable. I just bolted them to the inlet manifold in the end.

Brava is now nice and happy with a punto engine and gearbox in it :)
