what spot lights if your refering to front fog lights no you cant unless the viability is seriously reduced (same as rear fog light) (with the exception that you can use front fog lights in HEAVY rain or snow as well as fog providing viability is below 100mtrs

Driving round with them on all the time just makes you look a to55er and if spotted by the police its a £30 fine plus a document check and probablility they will crawl all over your car looking for any more faults they can ticket you for

and if your referring to Driving lights they should only come on when the main beam is used...

Requirements about the use of headlamps and front fog lamps
25.—(1) Save as provided in paragraph (2), no person shall use, or cause or permit to be used, on a road a vehicle which is fitted with obligatory dipped-beam headlamps unless every such lamp is kept lit-

(a) during the hours of darkness, except on a road which is a restricted road for the purposes of section 81 of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 by virtue of a system of street lighting when it is lit; and

(b) in seriously reduced visibility.

(2) The provisions of paragraph (1) do not apply-

(a) in the case of a motor vehicle fitted with one obligatory dipped-beam headlamp or a solo motor bicycle or motor bicycle combination fitted with a pair of obligatory dipped-beam headlamps, if a main-beam headlamp or a front fog lamp is kept lit;

(b) in the case of a motor vehicle, other than a solo motor bicycle or motor bicycle combination, fitted with a pair of obligatory dipped-beam headlamps, if-

(i) a pair of main-beam headlamps is kept lit; or
(ii) in seriously reduced visibility, a pair of front fog lamps which is so fitted that the outermost part of the illuminated area of each lamp in the pair is not more than 400 mm from the outer edge of the vehicle is kept lit;

(c) to a vehicle being drawn by another vehicle;

(d) to a vehicle while being used to propel a snow plough; or

(e) to a vehicle which is parked.

(3) For the purposes of this regulation a headlamp shall not be regarded as lit if its intensity is reduced by a dim-dip device.

I
2 Front fog lamp Manner of use prohibited

Wrong, they come on when.......driving. Usually a daytime driving light. Hence the name.

Spot lights are used just like main beam.

Fog lights are to be used only when visibility is impaired when foggy, snowing, spray on roads etc.

Tbf I switch fog lights on with my main beam...but thats because the main beam while ity has a long range leaves a gap of 20 foot off the nose and to the verges so they fill the gap...suspiciously perfectly like they were ment to do that but I kill both main beams and fogs if someone comes the other way.

in the uk spot lights, driving lights and fog lights are all classed as the same thing by the police. i've tried that excuse more than once. it doesnt work, even if your owner manual says they are driving lamps to aid your visibility to other drivers. end of the day uk road law applies in the uk, nothing else matters.

Why do people drive with these on, Other than when visability is poor or when the normal lights are inefficient to illuminate. Actually all Marea bravo/a and coupe owners should be allowed :D

Not having a go but the amount of people driving in well lit conditions. Thinking there car is a Gti because it has front fogs, sitting off your rear like a God Dam touring car driver. Its hillarious and chances are you're going to get blown away by a car with power or fined by a copper.

Rant over :)

The new Audi's have LED driving lights, not illegal to drive with them on all day. But then again i maybe getting confused with daytime running lights.

Incase those who didn't know, the UK will be making it mandatory for all vehicles made in 2011 onwards to have daytime driving lights fitted as standard and to be used at all times.

DRL's (daytime running lights) are totally different to driving lights, fog lights, or spotlights.

DRLs come on with the ignition, but should turn off as soon as the headlights are turned on.
DRLs are also only on the front. The side lights (front or rear) do not come on at the same time.

Slight change of subject here, but since the new Audis have almost a headlamp almost entirely made up of LEDs (DRL, Sidelights & Indicators), does that mean aftermarket white LED sidelights can now become legal or what?

Only when they are made and homologated that way.

No driving lights or spotlights are different to day time running lights (DRL's)

as jug say the law takes them under the banner as foglights but you wouldn't want to use driving lights in fog as the beam would just bounce back at you

most are surely front fogs, the symbol on the dash display being that of a rear fog, only pointing downwards, thus front fog. Not only this but driving lights tend to be mounted higher, where fogs are mounted low in the bumper.

Yes, 99.9% are fog lights.

So only use them when it is FOGGY...!
