high tension coil output is very high voltage. you cant measure it with a multimeter. you need to measure the resistance of the coils with the coil pack disconnected from the leads and its wiring connector removed.

on the wiring connector point on the coil there are 3 pins. use the centre pin in both tests, and the oethr 2 are each for a coil. compare the reading you get, they should be the same (5% variance is fine).

now measure the resistance betwen the HT output pins for cylinders 4 and 1. now do the same between cylinders 2 and 3. again both these readings should be very similar.

thats the best way to test a coil pack like yours. unfortunately i dont have any known good readings to offer you, but i do have a good coil pack at home for the 1.2 so i could go and test it after work if it will help you?

Hi Jug
Tested across the conector pins and they both read 0.5, jumping to 0.6 sometimes, both pins are the same output.
now the HT pins didn't get that far as one of the leads (No1) had "jumped" up above the rocker seal, when I pushed it down it was if it where on a spring and bouced back up, so further inspection shows the inner metal clip that clips to the plug head was level with the end of the lead, looking from cam belt side I pulled No2 that came off easy and the metal clip is right up inside the lead, No3 left the metal clip still on the plug, so it had to be pulled out with long nose pliers, no 4 again ok, what I can't understand is you put them all back on even the one without the insert, and the car runs fine.... no missing at all, in theroy it should be missing on No3 as there is no secure clip holding the lead to the plug, so I can only assume the spark is arking onto the plug, so there will be new leads here tomorrow for it.
How do it test my HT pins, would I put the meter on one of the outer (3 wire) connectors ontop of coil and the other shove up HT lead hole!

pull all the leads off the coil. there will be 4 pins (one for each lead). measure resistance across the pins for 1&4, then do it again across the pins for 2&3. the numbers should be stamped on.

Hi Jug
Looks like Coil pack is giving up the will to live!
kept getting conflicting readings from the hand held multi meter, so we took it off today, rang Fiat and asked them paramiters for this coil pack.
They said
LT side 0.45 to 0.55 ohms
HT side 12000 to 14600 ohms
anything out side of that bin it! but you can allow a 5% differance between the sides.
we hooked it up to the Audi VAS diagnostic machine, superb machine but at £8000 is should be, it gave us readings of:
LT 0.001 Megaohms which equates to 1000ohms
HT 15100

So it looks like it is near death now, a couple of days back the LT side gave me a reading of 0.006, today it is 0.001, the one thing that suprised the Audi tec was the readings where the same for both sides of the coil apart from the HT side one side 100 ohms less so one at 15100 the other 15000.
The audi lad thinks the spark is weak due to the 1000ohm resistance, must be squeezing the power dry, so when you boot it to pass or climb it kind of drowns the plug in fuel, it gets better as the car warms because the heat of the explosion burns off the excess fuel quicker, sounds good to me but you can explain most things away if you know what you are talking about, so I will order a coil, put it on, and see for myself.

coils arent cheap. do you want my spare? i can post it in the morning if you can pay by paypal. PM me if you're interested. i only want £10 +postage for it, that is what it cost me. i can easily replace it with another for the same price so its no problem for me.

Hi Jug
Thanks for the offer but we, um well, "borrowed" one off a 1.4 here that is going to trade last thing Fridat night, it looked the same as mine apart from the firing numbers where upside down, instead of 1 & 2 being on the bottom they where on the top, it looks new, mine is looking a bit dog eared and the mounting plate is a bit rusty, this one is spotless, engine a surounding area is filthy but the coil clean, so it looks like it has not been on long, so we swapped it for mine (looks good on the 1.4) definalty does not look like mine, no numbers on it apart from a sticker that says "pulse 8" however car runs like a dream, I think it is a cheap imported one, but I don't care car runs excellent and more important it was free!! so can't complain about that, so thanks for all your help Jug it was realy appreciated, I thought this was going to cost me another fortune.(y)
