General oil and filter change

General oil and filter change

I would warm the car up for 5-10mins. Then leave it for another 5mins for it all to run down to the sump and cool down abit. Then i would undo the oil filler cap, undo the sump plug and drain the oil into a bucket or similar. Wait for it to all run out. Then either refit the sump plug and washer back, then remove the oil filter and drain that under the bucket. Then fit new oil filter, remember to smear a bit of oil around the rubber seal when you refit it. Then refill with oil.

Job done. :)

You should always warm the oil up first because it warms up all the gunk that is deposited around the engine and suspends it in the oil and comes out when you take the sump plug out. I always take the dipstick and oil filler cap off as this can cause a vacuum and not all oil will come out.

I'd also consider running a flush through the engine if this has never been done.

i always add a can (or 2) of engine flsuh, then warm it up at high idle (2000rpm) for 15mins, with occasional blasts to higher rpm to increase oil pressure and remove the loosened gunk.

i also leave the sump plug out while i remove the oil filter because the act of turning it can cause it to leak dirty oil back into the sump.

a "kerb-it" recycling bin lid makes a handy drip tray if you dont have one.
