I have a Fiat Brava 100 SX 16V 5 speed manual transmission 1999 V reg. It's my first fiat and have only been a proud owner for 4 months.:D
What i am expriencing with this car though, i have never exprienced before. I have been driving for nearly 20 years.

When in gears 1, 2, 3, and reverse,(i have yet to try it in 4 and 5) the clutch will drive the car.

What i mean by this is, when i put the car into gear and release the clutch slowly, when it gets to biting point, without any accelaration, instead of stalling as you would expect, the car drives forward, or back if in reverse. It will also pick up speed, I can't say how fast, but i've gone up to 20 mph in this state, then its freaked me out and i've slammed on the breaks. Even then the car doesn't stall, and i've no clutch depressed in nor do I have any accelaration. Just the normal tick over of the car.

Is the car suppose to do this [?] I never come across it before in a manual car. I suppose its a bit like driving an automatic with a clutch and gear stick, and i know these types do exsist, but didn't know they exsisted in Brava's.

Any comments welcome please

i used to drive a citreon ZX that was the same as this, i allways put it down to the fact that it was a turbo deisel and had tonnes of torque, i eventually incorporated into the way i drove, then i moved onto a 1.1 saxo and stalled it a hell of a lot. altho it appears weird it can actually be quite useful, its like having an extra foot sometimes ;)

Hello again

It's funny you say that you used to drive a car the same as mine and it was a turbo diesel, because referring to one of my other questions, you know the ones i 'have a lot of' ;) well the one other car with round dials i have come across was the Brava 1.9+S+Turbo+D. This same car also had maroon interior as well. (seating i mean)

You might be experiencing the joys of engine management working correctly:
it will try to maintain a tick-over of (selects random number) say,
800 rpm.

If you're very gentle with the clutch it will try to maintain correct tick-over speed.

A less extreme example occurs when you put on the lights and HRW.

LJJac,

Could it be an electronic problem? It seems like when the engine is cold and the Electronic Control Unit regulates engine revs...
But to you happens also when the engine is hot, maybe the ECU has some problems, a round to garage is advised...

Or maybe someone in Fiat monted you the box gear of Ferrari F2002...

CIAO! :) :)

My HGT does this in 1st and 2nd as well. I also beleived it to be the engine management system maintaining tickover as when I depress the clutch the revs drop to 500 and then back up again. Dont worry about - its a Fiat after all and you just know something strange is about to happen!

Hey All,

My Fiat Bravo 1.4SX will do that from cold in both first and second gears. Nothing to special I guess as when the engine warms up it will tend to stall more than actually go forward.

I assume this is todo with the engine being cold and the high revs at that point in time.

Hope it Helps

My Bravo 1.6 HLX also does this, mind you so did my 206 - used to be able to go thru all the gears without my foot on the accelerator, as long as I was very careful with the clutch.

Matt.

Hi

I used to drive a Brava 1.8 ELX (now got a 1.6 Stilo Dynamic) and my Brava was the same as your Bravo - it used to get up to 20mph in 2nd/3rd gear going up the drive at school.

Joking to my local dealer that it had an autopilot system, they said it was an "anti-stall" procedure, in which the car keeps the rev's up to prevent stalling, hence with the drivetrain engaged and at idle, the car will naturally move off, and the revs increase.

So it's perfectly normal (apparantly). Its also quite handy too - i can drive out of school for 3 minutes pedal free!
