Not long ago I bought my sisters -96 Brava 1.4 12V. According to her, the front left and right rear brakes are working, but won't let up after braking. Also the ABS unit will sometimes work, other times not (almost no stopping power/no ABS "scraping").

Considering the Bravo/Bravas seems to have recurring problems with the ABS and the fact that neither my Punto or my Integrale have ABS, I relly feel like removing the whole thing. How much work would I be looking at? I´ve been sick the last week, so I haven't been able to take a look under the hood :(

the 1.4 doesnt have ABS.

front left and right rear brakes work on the same circuit, so if they are both sticking it would almost certainly be a problem with the master cylinder, a scrapyard replacement should solve that for a tenner.

If you're right I'm going into hiding :eek: :D

But I'm quite sure it's got ABS. If it´s just the master cylinder like you say it should be quite an easy fix.

EDIT: just checked, it does have ABS (phew) :D

in that case it cant be a 1.4. ABS was not fitted to any 1.4 model at any time, and to retro-fit it would be a real nightmare, so there are only 2 possibilities;

1. it doesnt have ABS
2. it isnt a 1.4

when you switch ignition on does the ABS light illuminate, and that same light switches off a few secs after starting the engine?

if by some miracle you do have ABS on a 1.4 (for example if someone fitted a 1.4 engine to a 1.8 car) then the problem is still the master cylinder, ABS doesnt affect that diagnosis.

1. It has an ABS unit located above the master cylinder
2. The badges say 1.4, the rocker cover says 12V, and the cars registration papers say 1.4. Also, several spare parts dealers lists the 1.4 both with and without ABS (i.e krogslund.dk who list "Abs sensor,bag,højre,-11/98", "ABS sensor rear right for models up to -11/98").

But the key issue is never the less what's causing the issue, so I'll get hold of a new master cylinder. Thanks alot :)

no no my friend
as i understood when your sister brakes then the wheels don't release..i bet that after some time she smells brake pad burning..this is due to clogged brake fluid tubes...the rubber ones that come into the brake aparatus..this is due to old brake fluid and needs changing...change firstly all the rubber tubes that go to the wheels and after that change the brake fluid and change it again so that all the sh@#$ from the system go out...it is'nt the master cylinder!! that's why the ABS unit don't work

true rubber flexi-hoses are a common cause of binding, but this is happening on 2 brakes on the same shared circuit so the chances are it is happening at the master cylinder (vs the chance it would happen on the hoses at 2 different brakes at the same time). if it was only happening on 1 brake then i would say grease it first, then replace flexi-hose if that failed.

I agree, if only one of the wheels stuck I'd check the hoses. I'll try replacing the master cylinder and bleed everything thoroughly first and then see if something still binds. At least it's not the ABS unit itself, like I feared at first. Thanks alot, both of you :)
