Hi again,
I was driving the other day without my stereo on (very rare) and i noticed that when i was accelerating with low revs my car made a horrible noise. not a usual struggling with low revs noise but a real diesel "growl" it is hard to explain!
when i am out of gear and rev the engine it sounds fine so i figured that would rule out any exhaust or engine problem. When i bought the car i noticed it had a nasty noise when i put the clutch down, the garage fixed that and told me it was the thrust bearing. but now i am worried that my gearbox could be on its way out too!
any suggestions welcome!

Any idea how much it would cost to have that done? Not really mechanical myself but would turn my hand to a relatively simple job!

Ok, i take it that you meant it is not serious and wont cause me problems if i dont do it!? Thanks again Jug you are a fiat legend! LOL

you can usually use the car for years with a noisey gearbox, if it suddently gets a lot worse then gearbox failure is coming soon.

Hi there,

i am a gearboxes specialist and it is always better to do it early because its a case of 1 bearing instead of a compleatly smashed gearbox

a good easy way to tell if your bearings are going is sit still at idle and put your foot on the clutch if the growl/whine stops then gearbox is on the way out THIS DOESNT ALWAYS WORK

Ive got the same thing on my 1996 mk1 punto 1.6 sporting, as the garage said the bearings are worn and need replacing. Which is annoying because ive already replaced it once and now i'l have to do it again! Obviously i don't want to leave it like this for long as i could ruin the box completely. To rebuild is very expensive, and i don't want to replace it again to have the same problem in 6months time.
There's 2 types of box fitted to mine apparently, im assuming 1 is the tipo type and the other is 1 like the bravo/brava?
I'm woundering if 1 from a 1.8 tipo/tempra or bravo/brava would be the same, or maybe even a gearbox from a mk2 punto 1.8 HGT. As maybe it would be a stronger box?
I don't know what to do for the best, unless someone knows someone who they could recomend in the midlands who would be able to repair my exsisting gearbox?:bang:

you have the 1581cc 8v engine.

the bravo uses the 1598cc 16v engine, a different family of engine, so its gearbox almost certainly wont fit.

your engine is a 3rd generation sohc, so you have a better chance of a 128 or x1/9 gearbox fitting (1st and 2nd gen). the only other 3rd gen sohc is the 1372cc engine, that engine has the only gearbox i would suggest is likely to fit. the 1372cc lump appeared in the uno, tipo, tempra, and also the punto turbo. your 1581cc lump also appeared in other cars so you could use the gearbox from one of them, such as tipo, tempra and lancia dedra. that gives you a fair few cars to look for as suitable donors.

Cheers for that, at least ive got a few more options to choose from now. I know someone who's got a box from a uno turbo, so i'l make sure it's from a 1372 engine and not the the earlier 1301 turbo.
And there was a lancia and a tipo at at a scrapyard i go to, so il get looking!!
I did also wounder if a gearbox from a mk1 Fiat Punto 60 1.7TD/55D would be the same, as least the engine size is similar possibly as an outside chance perhaps?

Been given a box from a 1.4 tipo for free!!!, so gona get a garage to check it over soon to make sure its in good condition and make any repairs before it goes in.
I.e replace any leaking seals or worn parts etc...
Then i can get it fitted and all will be well!! can't wait!

Cheers for all your help,

Paul :)

excellent (y)

if its from a non-turbo version you should notice your acceleration is a lot better with it fitted, it'll be like a rocket.
