i have a problem with my gearbox or clutch.

1) have taken the battery out now. and it will go in every gear ok.. so does that mean my gearbox is fine?

2)with the battery still out, when i put my foot on the clutch there's like a popping / banging noise coming from it, and when i last tried to get it going, i would touch the clutch, and there would be a horrible scraping noise.

2 or 3 weeks later, with the battery still connected, i tried to get in in gear, couldnt get it in any gear, even with my foot right down on the clutch.

does it sound like my gearboix is ok? and my clutch is knackered? or my clutch hydraulic cylinder is knackered? or both?

got the battery out to change the clutch, but, if i need a new box, i will either scrap it, or get a cheap 2nd hand box at the same time.

- related to the box. there was oil or something on the bottom of the box. dont know where it is coming from, and not much of it. not a drip, but has dripped once or twice recently, but the car hasnt been going for weeks, so maybe it only drips when i turn it on for 10 seconds. any ideas

A grinding scraping noise when the clutch is engaged may be due to a bad transmission input shaft bearing.

Check your clutch fluid If its fine then it either your slave or the clutch itself worn out.

unless your engine is running this test is meaningless.

popping/banging with the engine switched off is a very good clue to diagnose the situation. it rules out the gearbox and release bearing (sice neither is rotating during the noise). determine if the noise is coming from inside the bell housing (new clutch time) or outside (e.g. master cylinder or slave cylinder or pedal spring). either way it cant be the gearbox.

thats not unusual when you do not have the engine running.

so far you have told me nothing that is useful in deciding the condition of the gearbox, so i have no reason to suspect it is damaged. to decide if your clutch or hydraulics are the problem do a simple visual inspection to see if the slave cylinder is moving the fork. if it is then the hydraulics are working fine and your problem is the clutch.

not unusual, its usually a weap from one of the shaft seals. keep an eye on the gearbox fluid and top up as required. if you can determine which seal is leaking you can replace it during clutch replacement.

you really need to do some tests with the engine running. what happens if you start the engine and then try to select a gear?

as above, got it back together, to preform simple test, to post on here, and it wont start.

really annoying. some if the dask lights come on, but not the oil/ or the code light. :bang:

they came on once. so i tried starting it, engine ticked for a second, then nothing.

tried again loads of time, and they didnt come on. then one time they did all come on, and got the same small tick then nothing. I didnt change anything between the lights coming on, and not coming on. any ideas?

it started fine, and theyve always come on till today?

ok got it goin now when i touch my foot on the clutch it makes a loud screeching noise. can get it in first, but even with revs the wheels only slowly went round.

tried getting it in reverse and couldnt, just made the gear grinding noise each time, the clutch was right down.

by this would you assume the gearbox is fine, and the clutch isnt engaging properly?

going to get a nex clutch and start to replace... are there any other checks i could do, to see that the gearbox is ok, before i take it off?

car is on axle stands, and been a non-runner for 3 months. would you say definately the clutch is knackered?

Your gearbox is fine, you just need a new set off clutch and all your problems will be solved plus you will have smoother clutch pedal!
