OK here's one for all you bofins out there...

I have a '96 (P) 1.6 16v Brava SX, and lately it has developed a very annoyin problem which has now got quite bad =:)cry:

Intermitently when accelerating, the car has started chuggin like it's running out of fuel, but, when i put my foot on the clutch it revs freely?!?!
I thought it was somethin to do with the fuel side of things but it only happens when there's drive at the wheels.:bang:

...it may just be me, but i only notice it after or during turnin right, but like i say, i may be wrong.

Thanx either way...

does the fuel injection fault light illuminate during the "chuggin"?
it is a round red light that has a picture of what looks like a hose pipe squirting water.

as its a 1.6 the first thing to do is check your injecgtors using a multimeter to measure the resistance of all 4 injectors. there are many threads on this subject if you search.

you also need to consider spark plugs and ht leads. remove all 4 spark plugs to compare them, if any look different it tells you which problem the cylinder is on, and the colour/condition of the plugs will tell you a lot about the health of the engine.

Hiya m8...

No, no lights come on, but i will test the resistance of the injectors.
I'm gonna fit all new leads and plugs as the car's due a good service, but, if it was down to any of this, wouldn't it still do it with or without the clutch depressed as it is still using the engine?!

a misfire will be far more prominent under load compared to revving freely. the ecu is good at compensating for a misfire, so much so that you often cant notice it when revving freely, but under load you notice it.

Something tells me that sounds like the 3rd injector problem! Also a solution is to have a diagnostic check.... byt this is going to cost!As Jug said chec with a multimetre the injectors resistance!
