Is it easy or indeed possible to change the front disks on a 1.6 Mk2 to vented 1.8 disks and if so, what would I require to do it.

Had a bit of a moment earlier when the brakes decided to fade   (n) (n)

I'm assuming its just calipers and disks. Or is there anything else?

Thanks guys:cool:

Cheers reaper, I tried searching and came up with bugger all :)

I guess i'll have to find some somewhere then

:p

Pads :)

I will check the specs and see what they say.

Why don't go for aftermarket discs? Apart from pads.

You can get a set (Zimmerman or Brembo Discs) for less than 200 euros

Why would he want aftermarket solid discs when a greater performance can be gained by getting vented discs?

You currently have 257x12x40, the vented discs on the 1.6auto, 1.8 and 1.9 diesels are 257x20x40 - so only the thickness is different. I did exactly the same job on my Tipo Diesel going from solid 257s to vented. Never had brake fade again.

Of course, i was talking about vented discs. The difference in endurance and perfomance is huge!;) (y)

Precisely what I was looking for, Thanks Hells (y) :D

Thanks very much guys and gals,

So I guess its calipers off one of the above cars and new disks and pads.
I'll have to wait and see what I can find.

A cheaper solution is to replace just the disks with perfomance vented discs, of the same size to use the old calibers.

You will see a new car, especially at hard braking. ;)

*always change the pads, when new discs are installed.

Erm, that wont work mate. Mine are solid discs requiring new calipers for vented disks.

That was my original post (y)

I've installed a year ago Zimmerman Vented Discs, without changing the stock calibers

Vented discs are around 10mm thicker than solid discs. There is not enough space under solid disc calipers to fit vented discs plus pads.

As for performence discs - more performance can be gained by fitting performance pads (e.g. green stuff) than performance discs. Fit green stuff pads with the cheapest discs you can buy and you will love the performance - plus if you then fitted performence discs you wouldn't notice much of an improvement.

You've just raised a very valid point. I've been looking at the Fiat ePER and that shows compatability vith most of the range with the calipers.

This link might not work.

They are single piston sliding calipers, so I reckon all I need do is change disks to vented with new pads.

Now has anyone got any difinitive part numbers for calipers and particular cars. As the calipers are sliding pin type, I'm hoping thats all I will need to do. Diameter is the same, studs obviously and I cant see them making 4 or 5 different calipers for the different brakes with the same size disks.

What do you mean by not enough room under the calipers? Do you mean when fully extended on the pins?

At mine 1.2, i've installed perfomance discs without a change in the calibers.

Here is a large picture, similar to my avatar. I know the calibers, cannot seen very cleanly though.. :(

So you have vented disks now?? (y)

I'm basically after standard disks but vented and not the crap solid ones that are fitted at the moment.

As you can see from the picture :D

@Hellcat
Even you put just performance pads, with stock (not vented) discs, the braking will be different after let's say 2-3 hours of "heavy duty mountain drive" :p

But i agree it's a good value for money (y)

on many cars you find the models with vented discs have the same calipers and simply use thinner pads to accomodate for the wider disc, in this case each pad would need to be 4mm thinner. however i remember comparing 1.6 and 1.8 brakes and i'm fairly sure the calieprs were different.

Bugger

So why do the 1.6 AUto have vented I wonder??
