you dont get as much engine braking on an auto so they need better brakes. if they use the same calipers as a 1.6 then you can use the auto discs and pads, however at a scrapyard a complete front brake setup from a 1.8 bravo brava or marea will not cost much at all, if you can find a set with decent discs that you can use it will work out a very cheap upgrade.

i found my 1.6 suffered badly from brake fade, my 1.8 didnt unless i was abusing it for a long period on a hot day (those sunday runs on a twisty B road)

Very good point Jug, mine faded dangerously after about 5 minutes of average use (probably hard use by most peoples standards).


These are pad dimensions from EBC. Only difference is pad length. So I guess the calipers are different. Arse. Thickness is the same at 17mm.

First pic is the Manual 1.6 and the second is the Auto 1.6
