I really hope someone with more knowledge than me can help us out on this one.

2000 W reg bravo 1.2 16v - When I start it up it will NEVER go in reverse, just grinds and grinds. It won't go in any other gear either so I just about manage to get it into 1st when the engines off, start up with the clutch fully down and even with the slightest inch off the ground, I start moving, its like the clutch isnt even pressed down, the car begins to move! Once driving its amazingly stiff to get in any gear, and first is a nightmare!

Brake fluid is just at min level, theres about an inch more engine oil in than their should be (dip stick). its also never been serviced.

Its my mams car and she's on holiday and left me to sort it, she desperately needs it when she gets back :( damn!!
- so Im looking for some help to try n get it sorted before the garage shafts me for imaginary parts and £500!!

I saw some threads on here about bleeding the master or slave cylinders, new clutches needed etc

I have no idea where the gearbox is, clutch fluid is or anything, can anyone help a brother out? much appreciated, you guys seem to know your game, hope u can help.

thanks alot,

Lee

the slave cylinder is a common fault, if you look under the battery and see a wet patch on the gearbox (that great big thing under the battery) it suggests the slave cylinder in leaking. since your brake fluid level has dropped it stongly suggests this is the case. a slave cylinder costs approx £27 at a motorfactor, brake fulid will be £2.99, so for £30 you can fix it yourself. if you dont know what you're doing it might be a good idea to buy a haynes manual or get help from someone who's more experienced.

DO NOT try to force it into gear, that will damage the gearbox, often destroying the synchromesh, which means you'll be spending alot more money.

why on earth is the engine oil an inch above max on the dipstick!! thats asking for trouble. the maximum is maximum for a reason.

Hi,

I wouldn't like to guarantee this but I don't think the 1.2 engines have a hydraulic clutch, therefore it won't have anything to do with master/slave cylinders. Sounds like your clutch isn't disengaging which could mean your clutch needs replacing or the cables are sticking. If you’re a novice mechanic then it'll be a huge job to change the clutch so I’d take it to a garage for that. Also you might want to check the travel on the clutch pedal, if that’s to short then it won't be disengaging the clutch properly.

My bet is that it's the clutch friction disk..

After all, i have changed it twice in the past 2 years. -> Drifting costs a bit :D

Hello, im also having problems with my bravo 1.2. Every now and again the clutch goes very stiff when i put my foot down and it lets out a loud squeel, now im having problems getting it into 1st,2nd and 5th gear. Sorry for interfering into your thread but i didnt want to start a new one when ours is alike.

i think you're right, i just checked in the fiat manuals and the gearbox removal procedure shows a cable for the 1.2.

release bearing (time for new clutch). if it gets realy bad you may find the engine stalls every time you use the clutch. by the time that hapens you usually need a new flywheel as well, increasing the cost of the repair.
