Okay, I've just bought a nice Y reg 1.2 Brava with an engine that's seized after 106,000 miles. The car is in good condition with lots of extras, alloys, fogs etc and has had money spent recently, steering rack / pump, clutch etc. I'm going to get the engine fixed or replaced, so am looking for advice and experience on these motors. The questions are:

Would it be best to get a full rebuild on the existing engine, or fit a replacement from a scrapyard (crashed late model)? What tends to wear most on these after higher miles?

I've found a 70,000 mile engine for £400 inc. vat and delivery, If I went for this would it be worth me replacing anything before it went in to get more miles, better value and reliability from it? New crank bearings, rings, oil pump, head gasket etc? Engine will be fitted by an engine shop, so now would be the time for a mini overhaul.

Any know weaknesses with these engines? I know the 8v Punto ones are bad on head gaskets, what about the 16v? Any general recommendations? (apart from 'fit a 20v turbo' !).

Any useful input gladly received

John

£400 is an awful lot for an engine!

main weakness is also head gasket (its still a 1242).

at 70k i would give it a timing belt and major service.

however i would want to know what is wrong with the original engine. i've never heard of one seizing before. at 106k it should still have years left in it, so maybe a repair would be the best (& cheapest) option.
