Right, I've come across 2 sad Bravas at a local tyre / MOT place that he's trying to get rid of, don't have full info on them but basic summary is:

Car 1 - forest blue mk1 1.4 12v R reg, owned by neice, off road since 04. Ran ok believe but won't start now (immobaliser?), new battery and blue key, old blue key snapped in boot lock, maybe no red key. Looks very tidy needs tlc wheeltrims etc. Too good to scrap but this may happen, obviously not worth much. I always liked that colour.

Car 2 - metallic green mk2 1200, 100k miles and engine gone but has had money spent, steering rack etc. Reasonable 15" 7-spoke Fiat alloys. Owner just wants to get a few quid for it. Presumably has all keys etc.

The questions are -

Blue car - with the 1.4 can you make it reliable by flushing engine, cleaning sump etc? Is the engine REALLY as bad as everyone makes out? Also can you get away without the red key unless something really goes wrong?

Green car - will any 1.2 16v engine do as a replacement, e.g. Punto sporting? And will it fit with the 6-speed gearbox or is gearing different?

Would be interested in your thoughts on these cars being made into cheap, reasonable runners.

first question yes they are terible lol

dont know about swapping engines but i know the 6speed box is compatible

any 1242 16v engine will be fine with that gearbox, and will fit in your engine bay, but you need to make sure it is compatible with your ecu and loom. i know a mk2 sporting will be compatible, but a mk1 sporting probably wont be.
