Is there a difference between an advance actuator and a stop solenoid if so what is it, also owuld a vehicle be fitted with both an advance actuator and stop solenoid or would it just be one of the 2? Thanks all

the advance actuator is another solenoid on a diesel pump, it is used to advance the timing when cold. it is different to a stop solenoid.

So then that means i will have 2 solenoids then? Also i tried disconnecting every single wire i found from the injector pump and the blasted car still started and wouldnt switch off :bang:

when you say "i tried disconnecting every single wire i found from the injector pump", obviously you didnt disconnect the fuel pump's live or earth, if you did it would have cut out.

if you disconnect the solenoid's wiring it would not make it cut out, quite the opposite it would mean the solenoid is frozen in position so it cant turn the engine off. a solenoid needs to be connected if you want it to be able to move, it doesnt work using magic, it needs a signal.

I found 3 wires going to the pump
1)is what i assume was a maf sensor ( seriously doubt that would make it cut out only realised what it was afterwards though)
2) was a black rectangular shaped box screwed to the bottom of the injector pump, and
3) was the actuator/solenoid whatever that is called

Therefore as you say i obviously did not disconnect neither the live or earth all i want is to find a wire that will cut the car out hen disconnected so that i can wire a switch into it so it can pass the mot.

in that case take your pick, live or earth.
(you cant use the solenoid for this because disconnecting it will have no effect on the solenoid, it will remain in whatever position it was in)

personally i would use the live, mostly because it will be easier to wire a switch on the live that you can position in a convenient position without laying loads of wire around the car.

however as this pic explains, it is just as easy to attack the solenoid.

Which engine are we talking about here ?

If the engine is not cutting off with the key, the stop solenoid is probably sticking - check the power supply to it. Also, note that the solenoid has electronics in it for the immobiliser - simply powering it up wont do anything - it needs to talk to the immobiliser box. remove it from the pump (leave it connected) and observe the plunger operation as you turn the key on and off. It should be possible to see or feel the plunger moving in and out..

Owen.
