Hi guys,

Everyone in my country says that on all imported second hand cars, mileage counter is pushed up to lower the taxes on vehicles.
This therefore lowers the cost for all second hand car dealers that import cars(and there are a lot of them).
This could be just a bad escuse if the real thruth is that it is the real mileage.

What I would like to know is, what is the real mileage, if it is possible?
I asked guys from authorised Fiat service and they told me they cant get other mileage then whats displeyed on the mileage counter.

anyone?

Your only referance in that case would be the service history but I'm sure that most imported vehicles don't have that so you'd just have to base it on condition I'm afraid.

Once the car has been "clocked" as it were I don't believe there is anyway to retrieve it.

on some modern cars a seperate milage is held in the ecu, which can be read during a diagnostic. you get some other interesting data as well, like the top speed the car has been driven at. in cases like this you could check the true milage, assuming it has not been changed as well.

on most cars this isnt possible and there is no way to check the displayed milage.

clocking is very common on imports because it is so easy to get away with, but in the UK its usually the other way round and you get many miles taken off to increase the car's value, thats why the service history and any old paperwork go missing.
