if the dip stick goes in as far as it should you dont need to clean out the tube, the tip of the dipstick sits in the sump.

if the tip of the dipstick is dry, it means you have low oil (or your new oil is so clear you cant see it on the dipstick;) )

Excellent thanks for your help Jug. On your info I put loads of oil in and it did begin to show on the dipstick, so I guess I was running almost dry  But why didnt the oil warning light come on?

Because it's not a oil level gauge on the Brava/o but just a oil pressure gauge...

take a sharp corner faster than normal such as leaving a roundabout and
when oil is low in a brava the oil light will flash on and off as it moves away from the oil pump in the sump. this is the only time the oil light will show when engine has started .
Apart from when all the oil pressure has gone.
dont forget although its common sense . if the oil light ever stays on longer than a second you should stop your car as soon as it is safe and switch off the engine.

I always change the oil every 6000 miles in my brava (parting company with it on friday for a grande)
so it was always hard to see the clean oil on the dip stick.
placing end of dipstick after wiping it and re dipping it on a clean piece of tissue or kitchen roll helps see the level of oil by soaking into the tissue.
this could avoid you over filling it which is bad as well.
