Hello forum,

Gearbox oil is leaking slightly (A patch about as big as your hand after a couple of days on the drive)....so not a shocking leak but needs to be fixed.

Cant get it repaired for a couple of weeks so I want to check the oil levels and top up whilst waiting for the repair to make sure I dont ruin the gearbox in the mean time.

I have no idea how to do this!....A few simple instructions would be helpful.

Also, what sort of gearbox oil does the car need?

Thanks for your help :)

you need a fiat sump plug key (hex bit, cant remember the size)

take the filler plug off, pour oil i till it overlfows, replace filler plug.

you need hypoid gear oil API GL-5.

Thanks for that.

What I really need to know is where the filler plug is actually located.

I am assuming under the battery?

Any help always appreciated :)

As above.
Also, am guessing your leak will be from the driveshaft seal. Easy-ish if it is passenger side driveshaft but  if it is from the drivers side driveshaft. :(

You jack the front up as if you were changing the wheel, or stick it on a pair of ramps, crawl under undo the 12mm hex, get your 1 litre bottle of oil which has a wee straw type thing shove it in the hole and squeeze. Then invert the bottle. Ok so you'll end up overfilling as you can get the car flat.

No, but I didn't expect anything. I only checked as I was doing an oil change so thought it worth while. Am a bit surprised that it needed topping up :(
