Hi guys, im thinking of buying a Bravo in the near future, having had a punto before which was an excellent car i feel like a bit of an upgrade.
Could anyone tell me what to look out for when buying a Bravo? Also what common problems there are with the Bravo?

Thanks Very much
Joe

it depends what engine size you're interested in. let me know what engine you want and i'll tell you what specific issues that engine has.

faults that are common on all models include (use to get price down if you find them):
-door handle rubber persihes
-rear wash doest work (due to blocked non-return valve or pipe come off in tailgate)
-rear wiper doest work (due to rear wash pipe leaking on it)
-sunroof leaks (look for water marks or mould under sun visors)
-anti roll bar drop links make knocking nosie voer rough surfaces
-door check strap bracket snapped (door swings freely or makes loud clicking noise when opened)
-stalk switch assembly faults (check all lights and wipers work correctly)
-instrument panel faults (check all gauges work correctly)

things to check for on all models include (can also be used to get price down):
-red key (master and cant be replaced)
-2 blue keys (with working remotes on higher spec models)
-2 alarm keys (on mk1 models that have an alarm)
-2 remote key code keyrings (paper keyrings with 4 digit codes, only on mk1 models with remote keys)
-timing belt change at 50-60k (costs a lot on 2.0 models)
-air bag light comes on for a couple of secs when starting engine and then goes off
-abs light (comes on & goes off same as airbag light) on models with abs
-check fuel injection system fault light goes out, same as airbag light

and the most important rule to remember, never buy a 1.4 :)
(no offense to the 1.4 owners, but you know its true)

WOuld you say that it is a pretty buggy car then? Would it be better to go for another Punto? Im probably looking at the 1.6 engine.

Cool, i'm definately going to get one now then. They don't seem too badly priced either, for the same price could get a crappy Mk1 punto.

the 1.6 is a good choice. if you can get a 1.6HLX then i'd recommend that because the HLX spec is much nicer than the SX.

as already said the main problem with the 1.6 engine is injector failure. thankfully this is something we have dealt with several times so you're in good hands (y)

at a garage the repair can easily cost several hundred pounds, done DIY it costs £5-10 and takes a couple of hours.

the other main issue on the 1.6 is idle control. in winter its not unusual to notice erratic idle when the engine is cold. again this is easily and cheaply fixed so its nothing to worry about.

the bravo may have several common faults, but there is nothing major or expensive to worry about, making it a good choice for anyone who's willing to fix a few bits and bobs on occasion. scrapyards are full of good parts so anything you need can be obtained cheaply and easily.

for the same money you'll have a very hard time finding a better car, i couldnt :)

plus there are many good things about the bravo, such as the willing engines (even 1.6 is fast enough to be very good fun around town and on motorway), capable chassis giving safe and predictable handling (easy to chuck about), and of course sexy styling that still makes many newer cars look boring and crap.

there's plenty of choice in the bravo market so look at a good few cars, haggle hard and find a good one. you can easily pick up a real bargain.

Cheers thats excellent advice! Just what i was hoping for, thanks very much you guys have been great!

one other thing - if your looking for a bravo sized car, theres no competition!

Peugeot 306 - either twice the price of bravo or twice the mileage!
Ford Escort - LOL
Citroen ZX - square
Honda Civic - too expensive to buy and maintain
Toyota Corrola - boring old mans mobile
Alfa 145/6 - good luck with insurance
Volkswagen golf - Mk3s SUCK and look old + occasional rust
etc etc

i sprayed each light the same colour as the car (well most of each light), and then added corsa smoked side repeaters for the indicators and reverse lights. at the time i thought it was a great one off mod, but looking back it was total chavage. i got a lot of great comments about those lights, and several people tried (badly) to copy them. it passed an MOT like that.
