Made some measurements before to the cigarette lighter compartment in my car and descovered that a tomtom 510 would fit in there if i removed the cigarette lighter. problem is, what could i use to fill in the sides for a holding for the sat nav? whatever i use i will cover in material to blend in with the interior of the car.

any one thought about doing this before?

ideas on it are very welcome

thanks

the gear stick will obstruct your view (especially when driving in 5th), plus its an awkwards angle to view the screen at, and dangerous when driving. touching the screen will be difficult. its possibly the worse place to put it. why do you want it there?

it shouts directions out anyway so thats not a problem. plus before hand i had to focus my eyes inside the car to look at it anyway so its not that much difference. TomTom are pretty good at keeping a decent signal as i've had it sat in front of the gear stick before and its still worked, but if it does block the signal its not problem to fit an extension aeriel :)
Does that ciggarette light thing screw out? so i can take the tray away and do it somewere else? then refit?
yea i'd leave 2 thumb holes so it can slip out easily.
i wondar if styrafoam would work? then cover it with material?

I was just replacing bulbs there yesterday, so here go my observations ;)

Yes, you can take it out - unscrew 4 allen bolts (two below, two visible when you open the ashray).

The whole lighter/ashtray assebbly goes out and you get a pretty big hole for anything you want plus wiring with +12, +12 switchable and -.

For easy installation of tomtom you might cut out a piece of any soft plastic (screenwash container or even better empty oil bottle in grey color) to cover the hole and apply self-adhesive velcro strips to hold the device in place.

Look for pics of custom turbo installs in B/B/Ms - I remember seeing this place used to mount extra gauges.

i'm not sure you all understand exactly what i mean. i dont mean remove the conpartment completely i mean fix the sat nav in the tray thing tht folds down, then its at the right angle to view and easy to touch.
if i end up doing it i'll post pics when its finished
if all goes wrong i should be able to get a new compartment from scrappers won't i?

your satnav must be a lot smaller than the average tomtomt510 if you think its going to fit in there without removing the ashtray.

Heres the Sat Nav fitted:
It works a treat :D

Yea i guessed you could take it out, i think he meant for it to disappear in to the dash, as you had said you would build it into the tray. So that if you went to the shops you could just close it up.

Thats what i thought you were trying to do.

i did plan to do that, i havnt finished yet though i was just showing you that it does fit in. with a bit more work and sum filing, it should close up. but i don't think i'm going to bother now as it looks alright like that and i can't be arsed to mess around with it lol
