Smoothing?

Smoothing?

Badge holes. I take it these are in metal panels? Weld over the holes then grind them back, skim with filler and block flat.

Is the bumper plastic or fibreglass? If it's plastinc then you should have it plastic welded back together. Then sand back any excess material with a d/a sander. Next thing to do is to key up the plastic with an angle grinder or some 40 grit on the d/a. Skim over with some fibreglass if the damage is quite substantial. Then sand back the excess fibreglass paste when it has dried with your d/a again. Skim with some filler and block it all flat.

The does the black stripe in the rear bumper pull out? If it does rip it off, you don't need it... Sand off any paint from the bumper around where the black stripe is. Then using and angle grinder key up the surface of the plastic so it's all furry and got some decent gouges in it all the way along where the black stripe is. Next step is to mix up a lot of fibreglass paste, you need to do the whole bumper in one go! Skim it over the recess and make sure it's nice and even, you need a bit of overspill too so you aren't just in the recess where the black stripe used to be. When the paste has dried, sand back the excess material with a d/a sander. Then skim over with some filler, again, put a lot on so you get a good shape, then block back. You will probably need to skim it a few times before you get it right, the last bumper I did took me ages to get perfect. I'll sind some pics for you which should help....

Best pics I can find at the moment, I have lost all the pics of the last bumper I smoothed in which would have been good for you, but similar principles to everything in smoothing:

MAKE SURE IT'S SECURE: (glue, screws, rivets, e.t.c...)

MAKE IT STRONG: (fibreglass paste for small jobs, chopped strand matting and resin for bigger stuff)

MAKE IT SMOOTH: (proper sanding blocks, filler and a lot of paitence and practice!)

I'm thinking of smoothing my bodykit in myself, can you give me a link to the sanding equiptment you used (just so i get the exact right stuff). bodyfiller i'm ok for and have some experience using it so thats ok. if you could get me a link that would be quality!(y)

Thanks Steve.

I use an air powerd D/A sander too, but thats ni use to you unless you have a 200 litre air compressor...

For filler I use whatever they have in stock at Brown Brothers. Upol is a good brand, I think thats all they stock there anyway.

If you are smoothing in your kit then read this before you try anything, you have to make the kit fit very well and have it very strong before doing any smoothing over. This is a car my friend did in my workshop a few weeks back:

Nice one mate, loving the car btw, i was thinkng after i posted and was also wondering what parts of the kit would actually need smoothing in other than the skirts obviously?? is it a case of looking at it and judging by that or are there parts that generally look better when smoothed in?? (im getting a full kit (rear & front bumper and skirts) but no arches...yet:D ).

Thanks alot. Steve.:)

You can smooth in whatever you like. On the Corsas one of the most comon things to smooth are the plastic arches which are a pain to do because they crack very easily if not made strong enough. Luckily on a Punto you have proper metal arches so that solves that one. Skirts look good smoothed. On my project car I am doing the arches and the skirts only. I am manking the bumpers have a factory fit rather than smoothing them in. If you choose to do the bumpers then make sure you smooth over every joint on the bumper or it will look odd if you pop the bonnet and there are still bolts and screws in there. It's just a simple case of sticking some glue down and riveting it in normally, then smoothing over it.

The best thing to do is get creative, don't be afraid to mess up because everyone does and go for it! Remember, make it strong! I cannot stress that enough, and don't use cardboard like on that silver Corsa my friend fixed up lmao...

Me again mate, got my car back from the garage and i can see that the rear bumper definately needs moulding in to the bodywork but how would i go about doing this, would i need to la fiberglass over the seam, if yes do i just:

1.Scratch the paintwork where the fiberglass will cover it.
2. cut fiberglass to size and put in place over the seam.
3.apply resin to fiberglass making sure there are no bubbles.
4. after 2 or 3 layers of fiberglass, wait till it is dry and then apply body filler.
5. smooth bod filler down using those pads you gave me the link for.

Heres a pic of where i am going to be moulding it:

Ugh that rear spoiler is ridiculoulsy hideous IMO, spoils wht could actually be, a very nice car for a 5 door.

ED, you look like you know what your telling him juding by your work, i'll leave you to it, but heres a couple of examples of our work, its hard to get right without the right tools and time, and experience, differnt fillers have different ways of beign sanded, so be careful which sandpaper you use and the conditions you do it in, make sure the surface is nice and dry and very cleab, and a little rough to accept hatever you put on it,(FG or Filler)

Cheers mate, wasn't sure about the spoiler at first but its grown on me and from the front I think it looks really good:

Just out of curiosity whatspoiler would you think suits my car? Might be convinced to change if its decent enough :)

TBH, everyones tastes are different but i think that doesnt go with the car at all, and makes it look extremely chavvy, not that it should affect your own opions but i know most others will think that too when they see it. When i hd my punto i had a high level brake light spoiler on mine, looked good oin my opinion, esp from right behind, sorry only uloaded pic i have with rear shot, car is filthy!
