i dont get your logic.if i go into a body shop and know nothing/little of rust treatment then i would bow down to the bodyshops knowledge, would i not?
Glad you put that, because I was about to put the same.

I know nothing about rust, so if I asked a place to sort it, then I would expect it to be sorted and not spot signs of trouble a few weeks/months later. NOW if they gave options, one being cheaper than the other, to cure it, and I took the cheaper option, then maybe there is a point - but I can't see any options being given in this case....

Tend to go with the doctor myself if i don't know whats wrong. I wouldn't ask the pharmasist for a diagnosis.

The bodyshop in question doesn't do welded repairs. Research of the product you require is usually the first course of action (for me anyway) or else you might end up with what you didn't want. Naivety is no excuse.

But why research it; I would trust the bodyshop to give me the advice I needed, and let them act accordingly.

1NRO, ignorance and arrogance do seem to be a feature of your posts. Blissful it isn't.

The bodyshop in question had the rust pointed out. They agreed to treat the rust. Where there are 5 different options available, surely a reputable place should have discussed the ins and outs of each, with the pitfalls and financial implications explained?

If you go to a wheel supplier and say you want wheels and tyres, they offer you choices - not one set of wheels with one brand and size of tyre.

Update on the whole rust thing.

Just before Donny I took it back to the bodyshop and had it patched up so it wouldn't worsen, which the owner kindly sorted for me. I provided some rust killing stuff which showed up a potential problem area at a weld point. So it may be coming from inside a weld point, which is why it didn't go away first time and came back so quickly. And also why it's probably not treatable simply by removal and sealing, which was the best option at the time in his opinion, as it appeared to be simple small chips.

But we're not 100% sure - need to check top of arch first. So the summer project is me taking the wheels off on fine weekends, rubbing the lip and top of the arch right back, allowing rust killer to soak into weld points and fully sealing it, one at a time. Paint should be OK to match as it can be masked off with the join at the outside of the arch which makes my life a lot easier as I would otherwise mess it up  If it comes back quickly again, I know someone who is a metal worker who should be able to cut the arches back towards the bodywork and seal them up. Then if that doesn't work, we resort to new arches and big money!

So thanks to everyone who gave advice - again I wasn't looking to cause anyone problems, simply for advice as I like to be fore-armed when trying to resolve things. As it turns out, I won't have to unless we get to the point at the end of the second paragraph. And if it goes wrong this time, I have no-one but myself to blame ;) I still like to get advice and discussion over products and services - as an expert in one field, I appreciate how little the layman knows about other fields of expertise!

I have said a massive thank you to the owner in question for sorting it at such short notice, have kept my trap well shut locally about the problems - only a couple of people know including yourself and they also now know the outcome. As I said, I'm not in the business for causing trouble, this thread was in part a rant because I was upset and in part looking for advice.

What the hell did I do?

Do I know this person? Did I disrespect them in a former life?

P.S. I don't need to learn about rust. I own a fully galvanised car. The only bits of rust I have are being dealt with as I speak by a top quality coachworks.
