what do you use for removing small scracthes?

it's my first car and i have no idea how to remove scracthes my self. is there anything that i can buy at halfords and will make the job easier for me?

If you want to remove the scratch you will need a compound, depending On the severity of the scratch will depend on the results achieved by hand. If you have a machine polisher theses reults will be 100 x better.

If you just want a quick fix you can hide the scratch will a heavy filler polish, such as Autoglym's super resin polish or Autobrite's cherry glaze. These will disguse the scratch, but the polish will soon wash off.

Paint is black. I'm not sure if metallic or not metallic. This is my first car and I'm not very familiar with they types of paint.

Ok, there are different type of scratches around the body car. Some of them are minor, like the ones you do near in your doors with your keys.

There is one big scratch with the shape of an 'M' that some stupid did on the bonnet. And the worst there is kind of rust in the boot door at the bottom and at the top underneath the window. The previous owner tried to cover this rust using some kind of black thing but if you look closely it doesn't look nice.

I'm very perfectionist and I'm looking to try to have the car as spotless as possible. What advice do you give to fix this three types of scratches? For the small ones polishing with a scratch removal should be fine. But for the deep scratch and the rust?

dont waste any money yet, get some pics up (y)

the small scratches do not worry me a lot, what worries me is the rust and kind of the paint peeling off! :( See the two pics attached

Ok, and is this something that I can do myself (I have no experience)?

learn to spray paint, :D

find old car pannel wing door etc, and practice with rattle can on it,

most people rush in see,and crack on with the job and end up with runs galore,

result is half tidy car ends up looking like its a shed,

watch some videos on youtube,

thats lacquer delaminating due to poor prep
i guess its been lacquered rather than buffing up old paint but substrata not prepared properly

you have a problem because its on top of rear light and in your eye

i would scratch off round edge with a finger nail to get to solid stuff then touch in round the edge with clear nail varnish to stop it spreading
try a little first in case it reacts though
or get some lacquer from halfords and spray some in the lid and use an artists brush as above

alternative is major paint

Hi,
reviving old post.. but relevent question..,got a poor lacquer issue too,

my lacquer seems basically sound but with some sizeable surace scratches..

if paint - I would buff / rub / + t-cut..,

but this is lacquered Metallic,
what's the best method..,

I'm prepared to spend 5 / 6 hours with a machine if necessary..,
but NOT spend more than @£100 - as OLD car = little Value

thanks,
Charlie
