Headlight restoration

Re: Headlight restore?

should be ok if its smooth, the reason they use wet&dry and go to such a high grade is because they are doing the polishing by hand.

Using a drill there shouldn't be no need for the sanding unless the surface is badly uneven and then machine polishing should still take care of it.

Re: Headlight restore?

right am well pissed off tryed it again today but no luck again, the white doesnt seem to move at all its like its permantly white

i tryed tooth paste, tcut, cutting compound, rubbin compound

nothing makes any difference at all what so ever, what wrong with my lense why wont it work.:bang::bang::bang::bang::bang::bang::bang::bang::bang:

Re: Headlight restore?

its all juist cloudy white and sooo dul you cant even see the headight lamps when its on the headlight:cry::(

How am i gonna fix it nothing seems to effect it at all i ordered the buffin dremel wheel and the plastx polish hoefully they will work but i dont think they will tbh

hi i have a mk2 punto 2002.

I i have cut open the lense of my headlights so i could detango and mod my headlights and i thort while am at it i may aswel make the clear plastic lense shine again as it had dull spots.

I sanded with fine grit wet and dry
I used rubbing compound

This was sugeested by a member to make it shine again and i seen it on other places on net, anyway this made my headlight lense very dull and even more cloudy white i couldnt even see throu it now what can i do??

i managed to make it a bit better using loads of different things:

*Tooth paste
*T cut
*Cutting compound
*Rubbing Compound
*Furniture Polish
*Fairy
*Polish
*Window cleaner
*CD cleaner
*Window polish
*Headlight polish from halfords

Nothing seems to work the cuttin compound has seemed to leave a permanant white cloudy effect on both sides of the lense, it wont shift at all

i have now ordered somthing called plastx and a buffing dremel attachment and drill atachment.

Any tips on how to make the plastic lense clear again??

ATM it is unuseable as i cant see the headlight lamps throu this misty cloudy white lense, btw i looks much worse in real life.

Thanks for your help
Brin

Re: Headlight restore?

thats the one(y) i was trying to put the link from my iphone and failed lol you can get plastx from halfords, wilco motosave, ebay any meguiars stockists really.

try not to put anything else on them, t-cut probably made it worse tbh it clouds the black rub strips if it gets on they so my guess is it would do the same to clear plastic too, plus it not really made for this purpose its a paint restorer. Just sit on your hands and wait for plastx :) let us know how that works out, also try a really fine wet and dry 2500 or 3000 before plastx.

Re: Headlight restore?

cheers mate,

*wet lense
*sand with fine wet and dry
*wash and dry the lense
*apply plastx or cutting compound what evers gonna work
*rub with soft cloth in circular motion for a while with pressure
*Use the buffing attachment on medium speed on a drill
*wash and dry lense and should be perfect hopefully

EDIT

*wet lense AND SOAK WET AND DRY PAPER
*sand with fine wet and dry, DIPPING IT IN WATER EVERY SO OFTEN (TRY ADDING A TINY TINY AMOUNT OF FAIRY LIQUID TO LUBE IT UP MORE, BUT NOT TOO MUCH NO BUBBLES OR ANYTHING)
*MOVE UP FROM FINE TO EXTRA FINE IN STAGES 2000 >2500 >3000 ETC from reading the meguiars guide major point "Choose 1 direction to sand in to start with, vertically or horizontally. (I chose vertical to start.) do NOT sand in a circle." then each increase change direction 2000 = vertical, 2500 = horizontal, 3000 = vertical etc
*wash and dry the lense
*apply plastx
*rub with soft cloth in circular motion for a while with pressure MAY NEED A COUPLE OF APPLICATIONS BUFF REALLY FAST WITH A CLEAN MICRO FIBRE CLOTH

SHOULDN'T REALLY NEED TO DO THESE STEPS.
*Use the buffing attachment on medium speed on a drill
*wash and dry lense and should be perfect hopefully

good luck, hope it works out ok.

Re: Headlight restore?

oh yeah i managed to get my headlight clear again before it was completely opaque couldnt see thru it at all noow its normal and shinny clear:D

i used the PLASTX that was advised to me its really great stuff, it only seems to make much effect if you use a buffer tho lol i bort a buffer drill attachment from B&Q and buffered the PLASTX onto the lense.

Rubbing by hand made nodifference at all, mind you it took me 5 sessions of buffing and re applyin PLASTX to make it shibne again.

Re: Headlight restore?

Before: (much worse in real life couldnt see throu it from like a metre away)

After one coat of PLASTX:

After 5 coats (finish):

good as new PLASTX really works as long as you use a buffer attachment lol

cheers for help guys really worked appreciate it loads

Done it used plastz healight polish thing and a buffer drill attachment worked...had to use 5 coats of plastx to get it to shine again tho.
