Posts: 13 Thanks: 0 Trader Rating: 0 | 2K or Cellulose Paint? Just looking for some advice. After a little crunch in my fiat punto, I need to respray some panels. It was cheaper to buy a compressor and spraygun than getting the work done professionally, and I have a fair bit of experience using rattle cans. What kind of paint is best to go for? Cellulose or 2K for this application? Cheers ![]()

Resident DJ ![]() | Re: 2K or Cellulose Paint? depends on the colour really. if its metallic or pearl then you cant, 2k and cellulose is only for solid colours. and it will be more difficult getting hold of these now as the EU have emission laws now so all bodyshops now have to use water based paint. although you can still probably get hold of it but doesnt last as long, will fade over time and will need a lot of polishing if i were you i'd go down the basecoat and laquer route ![]()

Posts: 1,684 Thanks: 96 Trader Rating: 0 ![]() | Re: 2K or Cellulose Paint? cellulose is the old paint style. sprayed on and then wet n dried off and then compounded. took months to fully harden. 1k This is what I spray, first primer, then base then lacquer. Is a solvent paint. You need good ventilation. It is not as strong as 2k. Also it is being phased out. 2k This is being phased out. Is used by 90% of body shops and as far as I'm aware is available in metallic pearlescent ![]() You put on a primer that is usuallly mixed 1part hardener to 3parts primer. Then base coat also mixed with a hardener. Then lacquer again mixed with a hardener. This paint is toxic and you need an air fed mask. Waterbase paint. This is what i'm now changing to. It goes on easy but needs a warm draught to dry it. again has a primer, base then lacquer. It is laughable, it needs a solvent primer and a solvent lacquer ![]() so only one stage is environmentaly friendly.

Resident DJ ![]() | Re: 2K or Cellulose Paint? water base is exactly the same as solvent based basecoat, only it takes a little longer to dry, but it does have better coverage (i only put 1 coat on) it wont wash off in the rain when its fully dry (this takes like a few days) but you put laquer over the top of it anyway

This may be a stupid question, but is fiat black paint a match for run-of-the-mill black 2k? personally I find black a fairly easy colour to match. However there are hundreds of shades of black. so is incredibly unlikely a stock black will match. What exactly are you spraying?

Unless you just want it to look passable from say a 20metre distance. ![]() Luckily its black so matching the original colour will not be toooooo noticable. Personally I find metallic silver or pearlescents a pig and often have to fade it in to the next panel.
