Hi there im a newbie to this site, but i am in need of some aid, i recently had a knock and put a dent into my rear offside quarter panel, the main impact zone is under the light but it took the creased the side as well, now ive managed to remove the crease out of the side, but im needing some help in removing the main dent, now i know its on the main structure beam which means i cant get behind it & knock it out, what exactly is possible?? i was thinking about meshing it and filling, will this work?? or should i have a plate welded onto the panel as you would do with smoothing a boot and then fill it over???

its a 1995 N reg mark one

thanks Rich

that can be pulled out but special tools are required to sort that. i would go to a good bodyshop that can repair that. it will also need to be repainted.

replacing the rear quarter is another option but it will not be cheap. you will probably find it will be cheaper to replace the car

replacing the rear quarter as suggested wold cost a lot infact it would write off the vehicle.

My advice is this. For the dent on the side. unless you have removed already.
1st buy a suction cup puller, the sort used to handle glass. attach it to the centre of the dent and gently pull. I pulled out a dent very similar on my brothers 406 coupe on Christmas day, I did not have any of my tools to hand so I used the window suction cup mount from his Tom tom. worked well.

otherwise remove the interior panel and use your hand to gently push/massage out the dent.

The dent under the light and under the filer cap.
I would not advise filler as the dent is too deep. you must first get the dent out a little. This will be tough as you are dealing with a structual point, mainly the fact that the panel is curved and thus riged. It will also be securely braced as it will be spot welded to a second inner skin around the light appature, at the bottom of the panel behind the bumper, around the wheel arch and arund the boot seem under the rubber boot seel.
A body shop would weld on a special rod to the dent then attach a slide hammer to the rod to pull the dent outwards.

Might be worth havinga word wit a bodyshop unless you feel up to the job... :)

i do feel upto the job, what are the slider hammer similar kits you can get from halfords like?? i don't expect it too be perfect after all it is 13 years old this year, im after a punto sporting next year in broom yellow, but for now i have my 75 which i love dearly, but im deffo up for the job, how exactly can i go about doing this?

Hi rich that will need a quite a bit of filler!! i would get a pro to repair that or will look crrap! 3-4 hour repair 3 paint and materials £200+ish depends on where you go, try a find a good small independant bodyshop will be cheaper! Ant!

hi there
i wouldnt just slap a shed load of filler in anyways as it would just fall out, i feel upto pulling the dent out myself im pretty good with stuff like that, i am more than able of pulling the dent out myself as im a bit striped for cash atm and i have plenty of mechanic mates ya see, yeah it needs spraying i knew that from the off, i spoke to a mate who had similar damage to his mr2 he used a chain and another car to pull the dent out, then filled and sprayed could i do this with my Punto???

I work with damage repairable motor vehicles. Trust me the decent pulling equiptment to buy for 1 job would be less efficient than getting it repaired by a reputable bodyshop. However if you want to have a go then there is alternatives. If you have common sense, time and patience then there is every chance you can pull it.

It is too deep for filler. will look great for a month and then because the panel takes vibration from the bot lid it is likely that cracks will form, and eventually break up.

Strip out the boot lining behind the dent and remove the rear light. If there is any access at all then use it. If you can get a block of wood in through an appature then do. you should round the end off thats going against the metal so that it you dont end up denting the metal by creasing it. in a perfect world by creating the exact shape/curve in the end of the wood and by having a piece of wood as large as the dented area panel then in theory the metal will mould to the wood pressing into it. I doubt though that access will be so great.

Failing this you can drill a hole through the panel dent, put through a bolt with a large washer/or plate on the other side the larger the better. use molegrips to pull on the end. Otherwise on the other end of the bolt put a large washer before the head of the bolt. behind the washer use something like a steel bar/strong piece of wood with a hole that allows the bolt to pass through it. this can be used as a handle to pull on. So take a decent size bolt with say a 17-19mm head. slide over a good sized washer. then a fabricated handle with a hole to allow the bolt to pass through. pass the bolt end through the pre drilled hole in the panel and put a nut and largest sized plate washer on the other side thats possible.. pull backwards be carefull in case something gives so you don't fall over etc.

looks good ...nice to see when repairs go well:D (y)
