I've recently bought a P-reg Fiorono Chairman 1.7D conversion for my Mum, aged 90, who is in a wheelchair. My back door lock is not working - the key turns and does nothing. I have an immobiliser fitted and was horrified to learn from my local Fiat dealer that I cannot simply buy a new lock/barrel because the engine immobiliser won't recognise it and the engine won't start. I therefore have to purchase a whole 'kit' at a cost of nearly £200. I wouldn't mind, but the van only cost £800! Has anybody any advice please? I can't drive poor old Mum out any more until this is sorted out.

buy only the lock set with keys and handle, fit the rear lock and handle only and have 2 keys on your key ring, saving 740 quid..or second hand lock and handle and fit that, saving even more money...............................

Thanks for this Multipete - I asked the Fiat bloke if I could do this and he said "No", because the immobiliser wouldn't recognise the replacement key and the engine wouldn't start. I must admit, I thought he was talking a load of old bull. He said that my main key is the one which contains the chip which feeds information to the door keys, and a replacement key wouldn't therefore work. Bearing in mind I already possess 2 small push-in keys to turn the immobiliser off before starting the engine, I really don't know what he is on about! Surely I can unlock my driver's door with the existing key, turn off the immobiliser with the push in key, and then unlock the back door with the new key? Or am I just making it too easy???? Of course, I am only a WOMAN!! (even though I like to think a fairly sensible one) and the impression I got from the guy at Fiat was that because I didn't own one of their flashy models, I was a bit of a waste of time. Think I will talk to some real people at my local garage and see what they say. I am looking for a couple of front doors anyway from local (Chelmsford) breakers, as mine are rusty, so can see if I spot any good back door locks.
