Just found an interesting article (certainly explains why my iPhone works without the adapter)

"No software upgrade is needed if the SET USB and USB OPTIONS items are present in the MEDIAPLAYER menu.
Furthermore, you can plug your Apple media player into the USB port without needing the Blue&Me adapter for iPod and iPhone.
The new function should be available on cars with chassis number higher than:
- Fiat 500 chassis number 504557
- Bravo chassis number 4300440
- Grande Punto 703814/1693432*
- Punto EVO 707377/1700694*"

See HERE

Ah thank you! That would explain why my iPod works without the adapter :) I picked up my 500 last week, and plugged in the adapter with the iPod and nothing happened, and when I tried it without the adapter it all worked :)

It's a hardware thing so it's not possible to add the update to old Fiats.

No - its a software and hardware thing - but the Software update works with the old iPod adapter.

So ....

With the iPOd adapter you can download blue & me 5.5 and get full AAC/DRM/iPhone compatability ....

Does this mean I have the latest software? I'm just wondering if the B&M TomTom is likely to pair with my car, I've just got it and can't seem to get it to pair yet, I've only tried twice so far though :)
