Any Punto mk2 owners had a problem where the 1.2 8 valve engine for no
reason suddenly revs up on its own .
its only happend once to our new car. But scared the hell out of me .
strange thing is its running perfect again now.

I have a 1996 Punto 75SX 1.2 and I get the same problem.

With no notice the engine revs. on its own between 2000 and 2500 rpm. After a couple of minutes it stops (again with no notice).

The only thing to do is to depress the clutch and let it get on with it (this can cause a lot of embarrassment if you've stopped to let someone cross at a zebra crossing!).

I had this problem with my V reg Mk1 punto 60sx. After taking it back several times to the fiat garage, they finally found the problem. Build up of crap in the throttle body!! Changed it and not had the problem since. B4 it was changed i tried Shell optimax petrol and this seemed to help calm it down a bit and didt idol so irraticly!!
Hope this helps!!

Just taken my car to get this sorted and they run a diagnostic on it and it came up with a faulty temperature sensor means nothing to me but seems to have fixed it thankfully under waranty so only cost me £26

I've got the same problem with my 2000 punto 1.2 8 valve but my engine varys anything from 1500 upto 3500-4000 depends how it feels, might try the temp sensor anybody knows where it is.

I to was told it was the temperature sensor (IAT), but i would like to know which one this is as i only have a manual for the Mk1 punto and the Mk2 is different. Please can anybody point it out to me.

Is it still going!!!

Wife had same problem on 2000 Punto 2 60ELX 1.2 8V last September. Dealer replaced Throttle Body on extended warranty (non-chargeable invoice showed £259 + VAT!).

Same thing just started happening again (July 03) - dealer says testing shows same fault and have ordered another Throttle Body on parts warranty. Local dealer has been great about it but thank god it has all been covered by warranty!

PS First post - great forum...

I've just had the same problem on my mk2 8v. Had it for several months on & off, but had been getting alot worse - it was coupled with a hesitation or misfire, then the revs would go thru the f*ckin roof! - just had to put clutch down and hope for the best!!!

It was hard getting a dealer to take it seriously as it never happened when they had it.

Anyway to cut a very long story short - it started f@ckin up at dixons - they replaced the throttle body, but it did it again on the test drive - result new ECU! (thank christ for warranty). Seems to have sorted it (touching massive piece of wood).

My 55sx used to do and then my dad's freind bodged a manual choke for it and its stopped doing it now. So my guess is that it's the dodgy italian automatic choke's.
