slow train to bangkok

Posted 31-08-2007 at 04:32 by Jai

via kuala lumpur, and the podunk town of butterworth

the first class ac service to KL was quick efficient comfy and very very cheap, clearing immigration and customs in no time, and arriving in a city that is just as modern looking as singapore, but still retains a sense of the past with a bit of a jumble going on. we staying at the swiss inn, a backpacker joint, which was ok...and on the door step? the world biggest knock off market, everything and every label ever had a copy here, prada, gucci, chanel, the lot, it was great to browse and shop, the hawkers expect hard bargaining, and we had size 12 hob nails on....

next day, ignore the petronas towers, can only go third of teh way up, with resritctive views...went for the KL tower, much better 360 views, and higher, and got to see bas jumpers of teh top, quality, a bit of shopping down the main drag, and bag to the station for the overnight to butterworth, again first classm but a first class private cabin, very nice indeed

butterworth is frankly...nowhere, it's simply a transit point to change trains for getting to bangkok, and for 8 hours thats what we did, in the wolrds orst hotel, that had only cold showers, tiny towels, and basil on the front desk

this train lark was getting good though, and another sleeper to bangkok, and teh views were stunning, really awesome scenery, but all too soon, night fell, its suprising how quickly you fall off to sleep....

only an hour late arriving, not bad for 3 days......bangkok is immediately hot humid and smelly.....the total opposite of singapore...i love it!
