Dear all,
In the late 90's the Fiat Punto came in an edition called "6speed" and yes, that is right, it was fitted with a 6-speed grearbox that worked the 1.1lt engine powering the car.
If anyone knows more on this, do you think that this gearbox would fit the barchetta, and if yes, do you think it would be good for it? a nice and long 6th gear could make highways a bit more comfortable.
Thanks and best regards to all!

Its not a nice long 6th gear, 6th gear on a 55bhp 1.1 isnt going to be longer than 5th on a 130bhp 1.8 is it? In fact I beleive its shorter than a Cinquecento's 5th gear, hitting the rev limiter in a cinque at about 95mph.

Wouldnt recommend it, lol!

Its the same gearbox the punto sporting ,1.4cc ,has.It cant handle the 130bhp and the 16kg torque the B has.Thats why they didnt install it in HGT's.

ok, here are the ratios of the gearbox on the 6-speed punto
and my god its short!
1st 3,545:1 / 5,8 km/h
2nd 2,157:1 / 9,5 km/h
3rd 1,480:1 / 13,8 km/h
4th 1,121:1 / 18,3 km/h
5th 0,902:1 / 22,7 km/h
6th 0,744:1 / 28,5 km/h (at the b's rev limiter -> 208km/h!)
R 3,818:1
final drive 4,923:1 (wow its short!)

ok, forget it for the B'

Here is the B's gear ratios
1st 3,909:1 / 7,8 km/h
2nd 2,238:1 / 13,6 km/h
3rd 1,520:1 / 20,0 km/h
4th 1,156:1 / 26,3 km/h
5th 0,946:1 / 32,2 km/h
R 3,909:1
Final drive 3,563:1 (notice this)

the 6 speed gear box gives 28.5km/h at 1000rpm where as the B's 5 speed gearbox gives 32.2!

so the 6 speed gearbox is overall much shorter.
It would make the B' quick, but a 1.4 206 would beat you on the highway :(

The gearbox though can easily cope with 130bhp as it is the same body and structure as the MK1 1.4 turbo punto Gt that punched out 136bhp!

According* to people who wanted to turbocharge the 1.4 it cant handle the extra power. They say the limit is 110bhp and 12kg torque. And i dont think its the same gearbox, but i am not sure about it.The Gt has 5 gears i think .

*I read about it in the Greek Punto club.

Hi,

an interesting thread. Has anyone checked out the Alfa box. I'm making some biiig leaps here, but the Barchetta/Punto block is the same block as used in the 156 1.8 T Spark and the Alfa 5 speed box was pretty neat. It took the revs all the way up to 6700...

I also wondered if anyone had tried a T Spark cylinder head on the Barchetta?

A :)

Ahh, itis merely a mental exercise for me, I don't want to change the engine about, but I thought it a nice question to ask of the forum albeit tagged onto the six speed question.

On the subject of the six speed, I had a think about it some more; the 156/147 are based on the Tipo floorplan, the Barchetta on a shortened Punto floorplan so there might be some length issues even if the Alfa box (5 or 6 speed) mated up to the engine. I'd be interested to know the reality of it though.

I wouldn't change the engine, (unless it was damaged - been there done that :( ), although I would like a bit more torque and a sixth gear as per an Alfa GTA or JTD M-jet might be nice. The sixth gear does make driving different but then both Alfas also have in excess of 220lb/ft torque.
