Hello
I recently fitted LED bulbs to the rear indicators, stop and tail lights
These are a great improvement over the originals and are direct replacements
I wonder if anyone has used LED for the headlights as I understand in MAy 18 the MOT rules were amended to allow LED but not HID Xenon
If so are the LED’s direct replacements

Thank you

The upgrading of existing halogen headlamps with HID bulbs has been a MOT fail for a few years now. However upgrading with LED bulbs was OK. Not anymore! From 11/01/2021 the MOT rules have been updated to make the fitment of LED bulbs ( in existing halogen units) a fail.

I attach the new rule for clarity.

4. Lamps, reflectors and electrical equipment

4.1.4 Headlamps - Compliance with requirements - Changed sentence from 'Existing halogen headlamp units should not be converted to be used with HID bulbs. If such a conversion has been done, you must fail the headlamp.' to 'Existing halogen headlamp units should not be converted to be used with high intensity discharge (HID) or light emitting diode (LED) bulbs. If such a conversion has been done, you must fail the headlamp

Hi, is there a specific safety reason for this?. My headlights are rubbish! (Even with a clean cover)

Hi All
I find this new rule to fail led headlight bulbs rubbish
I have had LED headlight bulbs fitted to my Fiorino van for a few years now and every mot it has passed
I have seen the light pattern on the beam setters they use and the light pattern is spot on, so if the light pattern is correct how can this dazzle oncoming traffic?

Because a lot of people fit cheap nasty rubbish leds that create no beam pattern at all, dazzling other motorists which is clearly dangerous.

Good effort there.

GOV't legislation doesnt happen overnight..
So we can probably thank those lousy HID kits every other 'German Car' seemed to have retro.fitted 5 years ago :(

Yes, they cause additional light scatter and dazzle anyone forward of your vehicle while in use.

Because beam pattern is one thing, light scatter caused by different light spectrums produced by LEDs or HIDs I’m comparison t9 filament bulbs is another.

Your beam pattern can be spot on, but this won’t prevent scatter, which is massively exacerbated in refractor and reflector headlamp units in comparison to projector units (y)

a lot of light scatter is caused by greasy windscreens and coatings like rainx, remove that and will be no problem with on coming leds.

That’ll be light haze, not scatter. Scatter is from the beam emitter, not caused by the receiver.

You can always tell a night photo taken on a camera phone with a dirty / greasy lens due to the haze on the image. Wipe the lens and it’ll normally be 100 times better.

Phil, do you mind sharing where you purchased the lights and which ones you purchased please.
