Had a look in the manual downloaded from the forum for instructions on removing the starter motor but can't find anything.

Am I missing some pages or is it just not there?

Also, is this the definitive manual or are the ones on eBay any better? Has anyone tried them?

Check again.

I have the "B" service manual but not the one here on the forum.

In mine the alternator checking/removing/fixing is documented "Electrical Equipment" - Section 55 from page 3 onwards. of Volume 1.

Volume 1 covers the original "B".

Volume 2 covers (from June 2003) the later 98 series, 00 series and 03 series.

The bad news is that to remove the alternator your have to:

o Remove front right wheel and wheel arch trim
o Drop the exhaust down pipes from the manifold and remove front section from cat
o Remove the starter motor
o Remove bolt securing rear engine-gearbox mount to chassis/sub-frame
o Lower the engine 8 to 10cm
o Remove the alternator

Have never done this myself but someone here may have.

If you have a later model "B" (Volume 2) then this will not have the normal single large cat converter box underneath the car but will have two cats in the down pipes from the exhaust manifold. Will also have the modern flexi exhaust coupling. Volume 2 does not address alternator removal so it is either basically the procedure (suitably modified) or the alternator may just come straight out.

Sorry I'm a plonker! For some reason I read/translated Starter to Alternator.

My apologies. :bang:
