Am in the process of doing a cam belt / water pump and full service on our "B" and since the last time round I had forgotten what a complete ant utter "B...." of a job getting that liner out is. :bang:

Age does not help either as the plastic become less flexible and more brittle.

The main concern is not damaging the wheel arch/wing paintwork getting the line out.

Hint/tip for when putting the liner back is to cover the wheel arch wing lip with electrical tape on the fron and back sides of the lip. Will protect the wing lip whilst putting the liner back and can then be pulled out afterwards. Don't use masking tape as you will forever be chasing torn bits.

At 64 years old (in Oct) and whilst I'm pretty fit swimming 3.25km in around 55 minutes (minimum) 5 days a week (16 to 18km per weak) today my body is telling me that car maintenance is not the joy it used to be.

I think you are in need for some nice sunny whether vacation driving your topless B in Portugal to recover and rise your morale :D

I know exactly what you mean! I'm just a few months behind you, age-wise, but I don't get enough regular exercise (congrats on the swimming btw - that's a helluva distance to swim weekly).

After crawling under the car these days, I feel like I need traction!!

Try 72. you're right, car repairs even on a toy like the B doesn't generate the same enthusiasm it used to. That said, I still have slight knocking in the front end while turning especially in bumpy conditions. no knocks while driving straight .I just replaced the rear shocks and really like the improvement. just have to let her sit till I get in the mood to work on her.

I'm also in my early 70's. Personally suffer from slight knocking, sluggish starts in the mornings, come to abrupt stops throughout the day. But my b has never let me down. I do agree that at my age jobs around the house and garage have to wait until I'm in the mood.

Well just when I thought all was going well and the body just surviving the "was bound to happen" event happened.

The Gates Cambelt & Pump kit was going well till the supplied 168 tooth cambelt was too long. So in a rush/panic I finally maanged to source a Gates 166 tooth belt.

Just could not get the 166 belt to easily fit just too tight. Had to call wife in for assistance. Hour+ later still no progress. Got the vernier out and the new water pump had a larger diameter drive pulley.

Gates had obviously decided to up the pump pullet diameter and then supply a longer belt. Sadly they never checked that this new combination would work.

Not fun and now doubly knackered :)
