It's official - all Barchettas are b*stards...

... according to Fiat CEO, Olivier Francois, who has apparently said that Fiat has "no legitimacy" in the sports car market.

https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/i...ing-ceo?page=1

I'm sure we could all have reeled off a long list of exceptions, including the B and its sister Coupe, that prove the rule (Dino, 850 Sport Coupe and Spider, 124 Sport Coupe and Spider, X1/9 etc) but hey, that's why he's paid the big bucks!

Muppet. Uninformed, overpaid, complacent, arrogant muppet.

The problem lies with the fact a decade tends to pass with nothing in the showrooms.

'Repeat business' is an easy sell..
Tempting the punter back from a mazda or beemer showroom would prove hard.

Some fantastic ( iconic..) cars in the stables history.. but one a decade isnt enough.

I have no idea who the man with the 'French name' is.. but he needs to sell
FIAT CARS not US trucks

I accept that such an opinion from Mr. Francois, may not be key to his future with Fiat. It appears that with such a mindset Fiat, will again disappear from the shores of North America. We have enough Corollas, Sentras, ...grocery getters extrodinare

B'stards? perhaps..

but misconceived?

https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-review/abarth/124-spider

This looks like an authentically sporting sort of spider – and potentially the small Italian roadster we’ve been waiting for since long before the misconceived Fiat Barchetta was axed.

To be frank Fiat is not producing any real sports cars at the moment.... period. The spider is a Mazda MX 5 with more body bits added & I think the headlights remind me of a frog. Mazda has been doing this for years & with very good results.

Yes! To describe the B as misconceived is just bonkers.

Immaculate conception, more like.

Couldn't disagree with that, but historically, to state that Fiat has "no legitimacy" in sports car design and production is just incorrect.

I wasn't speaking historically, I didn't/couldn't read what was said by the French geezer. At the moment there is no sign of any kind of sports car at Fiat & I don't think anything will happen in the future. I have a Coupe 20vt, now, I don't see it as a sports car or a Grand tourer, perhaps somewhere in between. I wish Fiat would come up with a modern version of that, I for one would be very interested.
