Dear forum. Recently I changed the Voltage regulator on the alternator and everything worked fine for a while, but now the dashboard light is back on and alternator is not charging. It only worked well for 14 days. I am wondering if it’s a fault in the regulator or if the alternator is coursing the regulator to crash. Question is, should I change the regulator again (easy and cheap) or should I go for the more difficult process of changing the alternator.

Besides the obvious loose connections (especially the sense wire) and the brushes being good then I would now opt for one of the following.

1) Remove alternator and send for testing and refurbishment as required

2) Remove alternator and go for and "exchange"

3) Buy NEW. This sounds expensive but the last alternator I replaced (Croma 2005) I got a brand new unit for less than the cost of an "exchange"/refurbishment. Keep old for future exchange.

For me yes cost is important but so is TIME and RESULTS. I would do 3) everytime if the price was right. Then 2) and lastly 1) unless a few days/week off the road was not an issue for me.
