Angry gearbox problem

the other day I decided to change my gearbox oil because my 4th and 5th gear was popping out when driving and I used synthetic 75w90 gear oil which was recommended to use from another thread I read. now after I finished draining all the old oil and very black in color. I put in the new oil and went for a drive everything was working great I was happy. went to visit a friend and parked the car for about an hour. I went to drive home no problem shifting up or down but about 10 km into the drive home I tried to downshift from 3rd to 2nd and it could not go in then went back to 3rd no problem then tried to up-shift to 4th problem getting it in then I pulled over and tried to put into 1st gear and could not get it in, the only gear I could get in was 3rd gear nothing else worked. had to drive the B in 3rd gear all the way home about 30 km thank god for that, I got it home and parked in the garage next day I started it up again and tried to put it into the gears and nothing could not get it into any gears except 3rd gear I'm thinking it might be the synchronizes in the gear box. not sure but I have 1997 with 67000 km. and I've only put on about 1000 km since I bought it last year. can anyone please let me know what the hell is going on here thank you

Re: gearbox problem

I wouldn't have expected to old oil to be black. There isn't anything to contaminate it in a gearbox (as far as I know). The worst I would expect is metal filings or flakes. Is your clutch OK because if worn it would make gearchanging difficult. That's all I can help with as I don't understand the black magic that goes on inside a gearbox!

Re: gearbox problem

like dave said you should look for metal flakes in the old oil , and get the new fluid out and search if there are big flakes there is a clue of something damaged in gearbox , some very fine flakes are consider normal .
i also replaced my gearbox fluid recently by 75w90 , and i found some very fine metal flakes in the magnet and oil and so far so good ...
i also remenber some time ago wen washing my engine with a water hose and engine detergent after i leave it over nigth in the garage and went for it i couldn't engage any shift at all then i stoped the engine and find out that with engine stoped i could engage them ! i find out my cluth was stuck because of washing , i was able to unstuck it by pulling the car back and forward with the clutch pedal press down and engaged gear with the help of a friend ...
but you say you ride it home in 3 gear so if your clutch was stuck you would know ... you can also certifie if your clutch pedal cable is well tuned !
i really doubt the new gear oil is the cause of the problem ...

good luck !

Re: gearbox problem

if you didn't hear any thing unusual it seems to me there might have been some sort of contamination in the gear box. If the original oil had never been replaced it was most likely not synthetic and may have been full of microscopic metal particles. This is common with differentials, they call it silvered oil, that certainly is a bummer to say the least.I was just thinking of doing the same thing, my car just hit 30K but now I'm having second thoughts. My only suggestion is to drain the oil and do a flush with a suitable engine flush and then do a refill with new oil. When you flush it out check for silver or brass particles in the oil. Good luck.

Re: gearbox problem

well there was no metal flakes in the old oil, I think they must of put in the wrong oil, when I bought the car last year because I asked the dealer to fix the oil leak on the gearbox. Not sure what's going on, but I'm going to check the linkage from the stick shift to the gear box maybe something along the line is broken or loosen because it's not going into any gears just 3rd. just trying to find out how to attack the job. and trying to find a repair manual or something on the shift linkage to guide me through this project hope I can get it done before the winter gets here only drove it once this year so far.

Re: gearbox problem

Hi Henry, I spoke to a good friend of mine about your situation. He has his own shop here in Rockwood, he swears after hearing about your symptoms the clutch is the problem and not the tranny. He thinks changing the oil and then loosing your gears is just a coincidence He says third is usually the only gear you get because of it's straight ahead position when your clutch is done.

Question Re: gearbox problem

Hi Al, the clutch was fine before I changed the oil, I was having problems in the high gears popping out when I was driving. I was talking a transmission repair shop in Barrie yesterday and he said to check my shifter and linkage because he thinks something might of come loose, Could just be the control rods that have become un-attached. Maybe the selector rod that goes to your gear lever I don't know, So I'm going have to put it up on ramps somehow and crawl under and Probably best to have someone move the gear shifter around so that I can watch it's operation under the car and see if all the joints are together secured before i start taking the tranny apart and checking the clutch. I hope it will be something simple and get some driving in before the winter comes. if not, I'll have a winter project to do.

Re: gearbox problem

IHi Henry. I don't know if you read my post from last June, but when I was in Pennsylvania, my shift linkage completely let go. It was totally disconnected from the transmission and it just so happened to be in third when it happened. But I knew instantly it was my linkage. It was in a really tough spot where you have no room to work just behind the steering rack. Some lads at a shop repaired it for me and said "this should get you home". Well I'm still driving it and have no idea what they did. Iv'e put 10 K on since then. But I really plan to get to it before winter. I have a friend who has a hoist which will come in handy. I tried putting the car on ramps to work on it but I couldn't accomplish a thing.

Re: gearbox problem

well good news I found a mechanic that will look at my B, he restores fiat spiders it Toronto, he said he will take a look at my gearbox, have to get the B down to him somehow next week I only got 3rd gear and he's 50 km away I think I'll just get it towed, and hope he will find the problem, and fix it. I'm happy so far, I checked all the linkage from the shifter to the gear box and every connection was tight and moving.

Smile Re: gearbox problem

This is a update on my gearbox problem. I finally got the b down to the mechanic two days ago. He put it up on the hoist the other day and found a linkage was broken and rusted. and the transmission is ok. Good news for that. Now just waiting for a new linkage to come from Europe somewhere, he's contacting his suppliers over there and hope it will in be in and done by next week, but you never know.
