Re: gearbox problem

Hi Henry.Do you know which piece of the linkage let go.I still have yet to fix mine. There is a cast boss on the steering rack for one the shift linkage ball joints. This is the one that broke on mine.My son tig welded the ball end back together that was snapped off by the mechanics down south. Extremely difficult spot to access. I'm contemplating accessing it from above. It seems to be right under the airbag controller which of course means I would have to remount it. I think it might be easier removing the console than lowering the front sub frame.

Hi Al. I don't know which one broke but all he said was when he put it up on the hoist and look under the car he noticed the linkage rusted and broke, when I went under I never noticed it but it was tight for me to maneuver around on my back, I'll try to find out which one it was.

Hi Al went down to the car shop yesterday and he told me the one that broke was under the steering column. the parts should be in this Thursday and hope it will be fixed by the next day. the part came from Poland shouldn't cost me more the 300 he said when completed. parts and labour.

Talking Re: gearbox problem

Well after fixing the linkage found out the gearbox was no good. ordered used one from italy and it took 3 months to arrive. got it in and the BB is running great took it for a weekend spin and love it. overall it only cost me 3000.00 in total for gear box, motor work like new belt, tension, ect. and labour and shipping cost. now have to get rid of the fuel smell bang:

Re: gearbox problem

Well done for persevering!

My solution to the fuel smell is always to drive with the top down.

Re: gearbox problem

before the summer is gone we will have to meet up and fix it. also check out the fuel pump seal. My buddy Freddie had a rough week, blew the timing belt in his '77 124, and snapped a valve and then had a lady bump his Barchetta. Needless to say, he is not a happy camper.

Re: gearbox problem

I have Freddy's 77, 124 in my driveway. He unfortunately snapped his belt breaking a valve which chewed up the valve seat quite bad. So now I've sent the head in to have it shaved and a new valve seat installed . The piston is well marked but he got off lucky, it should be fine. All the valves and seals are being replaced as well as the belts, hoses and rad. My B, knock on wood, is running mint and I love the new stayfast canvas top. I will have to check out your yellow B, but grandkids and golf really eat up a lot of time

Just come across your tale of gearbox woe Huggie. I read earlier how a leak was fixed & you changed the oil & it was not a colour you expected. I suspect over time the leaky gearbox was probably ignored for a time & low on oil & not protecting as it should. Glad to see things all sorted now, enjoy the car...
