General The "well travelled" Barchetta

General The "well travelled" Barchetta

Apologies if I have done this one before , but I found this pic I took in Google Images .

July 2018 , I am going to spend the day at the Vernasca Silver flag event , an event I had never been to before .

I arrive at the town where it starts and the competing cars then travel up to Vernasca .

I drive into the car park and spot that car , another silver Barchetta , British registered , also sporting a tricolore stripe . I park next to it and take pics and the female owner comes out and couldn't have been nicer and more welcoming as it turned out that she and her partner organise the event from an office in this town .

Footnote....I was driving a 4 speed car at this point as 5th gear went missing a few days earlier in Germany .

I have just checked back on this thread , not for the first time but I didn't mention about 12 months ago that my then laptop broke and I lost 1000s of pics .

It obviously didn't occur to me to do this before but I put a different memory stick into my camera today to see what was stored on it , only 1803 pics , all from the final Italy trip of 2019 .

There's still more 1000s lost but getting back 99% of my final trip in Fabio the FIAT is very good news and as I have nothing better to do , will post many of them here , including some events I don't seem to have even mentioned here yet .

Just a quick taster.....

On my way to the Alfa Romeo racing at Varano circuit from the Autostrada there just happens to be the Dallara race car factory . Gianpaulo Dallara was born in the locality and his eponymous company has had it's premises here ever since he first started it .

After the Alfa racing finished I went back and went in as the small gallery of cars was still open for visitors for a few Euros .

That X1/9 pic is going in my 2022 calendar .

It's all go here !

Fabio the FIAT has gone to the scrap heap , they arrived 9.30 am with only 1 car on the truck this time and we all pushed the remains of a Barchetta out into the road to be winched onto the truck .

For a change , I didn't take any pics of it leaving , as I didn't want my last memory of it to be such a mess with all the bits missing , no lights , bumpers , bootlid ,1 door , no hood , dusty and dirty from 13 months in the garage and all the stickers peeled off .

I'll post more pics of better times in 2019 later .

I went to a show today , the Concours of elegance at Hampton court palace .
It's the only decent show that is near enough for a bloke with no car.
I went on a bicycle , with 1 gear , not a "fixie" but a 21 speed thing with broken gear change , I found it in a hedge .
Cycle about 10 miles , walk around for nearly 4 hours taking nearly 500 pics then try and cycle home again .Nearly killed me off it did .

Some amazing cars on show , I should think so too given the admission fee .

The Aston Martin Bulldog was a Bill Towns design, so it's not surprising that it looked a bit like a kitcar! He designed the Mini-based Hustler in the late 70s, a striking 6-wheeled wedge that certainly turned heads! I was very taken with it, and went to his Interstyl design studio in Oxfordshire (based at his fantastic Manor House) to look at it, and to meet him. He was a lovely chap - a proper gent, very charming, disarmingly modest, and amazingly generous with his time. I still have the Hustler brochures he gave me. I never got round to building a Hustler, but regret not doing so. So much fun in a small package! (He's probably better known for designing the AM DBS and Lagonda)

Ah, now I'm really envious! It's a very simple but ingenious design - it uses a second Mini subframe for the extra pair of rear wheels. Until a few years ago they popped up on eBay every so often for buttons, and I wish I'd dived in. Today, they're more sought after, although barn finds and poorly built examples still surface occasionally. But my wife would kill me ...

He also did a 4-wheeled pick-up version that would be a great little workhorse around the garden. Hmmm...

I saw this special Maserati on the way into the show , it was driving in the other direction and I wasn't sure it was part of the show as it wasn't on show when I walked in but it turned up in an organised drive in with a bunch of other cars.

I read the short info sheet on it but forgot it , should have taken a pic of that too .

Odd windscreen profile on a Rolls Royce .

One of the RAC people was allowing people to pose whilst holding the trophy , as I walked away , another one said quietly to the first that they weren't happy with the public handling the trophy .(n)
