I'm in the process of checking over my rear brakes in prep for the MOT.

I've just removed the rear offside caliper, and the inboard brake pad has a very uneven wear pattern. In fact, the outer edge of the pad (spring side) has clearly not been making a clean contact with the brake disc since it was fitted 3-4 years ago, as there are still traces of the pad's protective coating showing on the edge. Correspondingly, the inboard side of the disc is corroded on its outer edge for circa 2 cm.

The outboard pad is fine - evenly worn, and there's no rust on that side of the disc.

I was planning to replace the pads, and will now probably replace the discs too, but I don't want to have to replace them all over again next year, if that doesn't cure the problem.

So what might be the cause? The piston seems to be retracting smoothly (clockwise (y)) and the caliper pins are moving freely. So why would the piston be putting greater pressure on the inner edge of the pad? Could it simply be that the pad got stuck in the caliper, and was unable to move freely against the face of the disc? I had to prise it out with a screwdriver, so could something as simple as that be the answer?

Interestingly, the car has sailed through at least 3 MOTs with this problem, although I'd have thought the braking efficiency on the rear offside would have been affected if only 60% of the inboard pad is making contact with the disc :(
