Looking for a little help here with my 04 barchetta.

After 135,000 miles it dropped a valve the other night which has caused major damage to one cylinder & piston. The existing unit is now beyond economic repair if done professionally so I'm looking at other options.

So my question is this - does a punto HGT engine from a similar model year drop straight in & if so are there any issues to be aware of?

Any information would be most welcome

Thanks

Tim

hi Tim , and welcome, :-}
not the busiest place here..,
maybe post in the Tech section , as more "nuts + bolts" people will notice it,
put " barchetta / HGT" early in the subject line ; -}

out of interest had it had any major work done,
cam-belt still o.k., ?,
Charlie - Oxford

Thanks Charlie - I'll try that.

The cam belt was last done about a year ago - it was actually changed 3 times in a year, ..... once as routine service, again when it subsequently broke & mashed a couple of valves, and again shortly after when the key that locates one of the the camwheels onto the camshafts fractured & mashed another couple of valves!
Ironically, Id just picked it up from the garage the day before having had some work done to improve the engine - new throttle body, coil packs etc. It was running better than it has done for a couple of years .... then Bang!

Thanks again

Tim

Hi Tim,

the Punto HGT engine is the same one.
Also a Stilo 1.8 engine is the same one, as is the 1.8 16V NA Coupe engine.
Also the 1.8 litre Marea and Bravo engines have the same block, but without VVT. They give only 113hp/154Nm instead of barchettas 131hp/164Nm, but are also an option if you have trouble finding one, and second hand unit cost only some 200-300€ should you find one.

The 5-cylinder is a wee bit too long to go in unfortunately. A 4 cylinder 16v turbo can be made to fit though.

I was tempted to try an Alfa 2.0 twin spark!

Love that idea, what a sound track!
And soo many engines about. . .
