My V5C form does not list an engine number for my Barchetta, and looking on the forum (whilst searching for my answer) I noticed that others do not know their engine numbers either.

Where do I find the engine number on the block? I have seen the diagram on the technical manual roughly showing it on the front face of the engine block towards the right of centre. I must say that I hadn't ever noticed it in all the years of admiring the engine bay (infrequently, admittedly). I ask because I ned to point someone else in the right direction...

Unfortunately my car is away from home and my friendly mechanic, after is having trouble ordering me a new oil sump because the part the suppliers are insisting is the only sump, doesn't fit. I'd like to verify the engine number to make sure it is a bona-fide Barchetta engine and also, whilst asking on the forum, what oil sumps part numbers apply to the B?

Urgent help on this would be greatly appreciated as I had hoped to get it back by this weekend and she's been away from home for over 2 weeks already :(

...the original sump was damaged by a previous garage a few years back who hid their cock-up with a quick fix.

there isn't an engine id number.
All sumps for barchetta, step 1 or 2 will fit the engine as they are all the same.
Some other engine sumps will fit too.

Only the head of step 1 and 2 is different.

cheers

I'm not sure I understand what is meant by step 1 and 2 though, but if they all fit my B then job's a good'en :)

Thanks bollie69

step 1 has the ecu in the car.
Step 2 has the ecu on the plastic intake manifold

Thanks to Paul (?) at DTR who went out of his way to help me on the phone and get the part number. Much appreciated. May well be coming your way some time to sort this as FIAT are getting on my wick

Well, well, well... it turns out that there isn't just one sump after all. However, FIAT in Italy (as the fiasco has escalated to the point of FIAT UK Technical in Slough is having to liaise with their Latin parents) don't have well maintained records and so can't identify the one fitted to my car from new! The supposed 'only sump for the Barchetta' is missing an important driveshaft support bolt hole apparently. I'm guessing this hasn't been flagged up before because, at £300+VAT+fitting, nobody with a yr2000 car has bothered to buy one, preferring instead to fix the old one. I can now see the advantage!!!
I wait to hear news...

S130. I didn't get notification if your post and I've been a tad preoccupied with my pops in hospital :(
Happy to give you details but FIAT UK themselves are having to liaise with FIAT Italy and still no joy.... even with my chassis number... my whole car in fact! Turns out that FIAT didnt keep very good records and I've just had to put the old sump back. FIAT say they won't reimburse me for labour costs despite the work only being carried out because they insisted they had the right part!!! The American (Chrysler I presume) customer services representative in Slough couldn't have been any less professional or courteous on the phone. I was appalled.
20 years ago Sony pissed me off. I've never bought a single Sony product since. This week (not for the first time) FIAT have pissed me off and, as a man if principle, I will stick to my guns and never buy a FIAT group product again. Their loss as I now qualify for a company car of my choice at work.

Yes both are there and so too is the Ricambi number for replacement parts... not that this was any use to FIAT Italy either!!!

FIAT has burnt me too often. Bridge burnt. Once the Alfa and Barchetta die, no more. The Fulvia will stay but she's just a bit too special to ignore.

Hi Lima

If you are UK based the I would pursue this and even take to court. A check with Trading Standards is also recommended.

The situation in my mind is very clear.

1) you require a part
2) you contact your authorised Fiat dealer and give them Make (Fiat of course), Model and Chassis/VIN number
3) they use the official Fiat parts program/resource to identify and order required part
4) Fiat deliver required part

If you have followed 1) throught 4) then this is NOT your problem and either the dealer and/or Fiat are liable

If you were to take this to a UK magistrates court then I'm 99.99% sure you would win. Remember the magistrate is just a person like you/me and will hopefully own a car themselves (or a family member will). It is not and never will be your responsibility to identify a part for your car. You just provide make, model, chassis number etc. and the official manufacturer's support chain is supposed to do the rest. If they screw up or fail then you are not responsible for their failings and any associated costs.

Regarding labour costs etc. then for me the same applies. You put you car into a garage for work to be done. You are not responsible for problems. Your total liabilty is the cost of the part and the labour to fit that part. If Fiat/other supply the wrong part then it is the garage's responsibility to get Fiat/other to supply the right part and fitted and NOT yours.

Stick with this and DO NOT BE fobbed of.

I'm in Basingstoke and I too see it your way. It's clear cut to me too but the airhead on the phone didn't have a clue about interpersonal skills or about legislation.
The battle has just begun. I SHALL be reimbursed but I shan't be singing praises for FIAT customer support... ever.

Hi Lima,

Where do I find the engine number on the block? I have seen the diagram on the technical manual roughly showing it on the front face of the engine block towards the right of centre.

Like you I haven't looked at my b's engine very often, but about a year ago I noticed that there is an 8-digit number stamped onto the engine block. I've marked it on the attached photographs. This may be the number you refer to in your original post.

Regards
Giorgio

Giorgio.
I too thought that this is the number but it is on the head not the block.

Anyway, the issue has gone much further now with FIAT UK claiming no responsibility for my extra expenses due to their misinformation. I am fuming. I am seeing if I have a case for small claims court at the moment.

FIAT insisted that they only made one sump for the B... a car they sold until 2004 (?). Truth is that my Riviera has a different one which has a drive shaft support bolt going through it and FIAT have no record of the change!

Anyone with any advice on consumer law please PM me

Thanks Lima! The photo of the engine bay is 4 years old, it was taken a few days after I bought my b. The previous keeper (silkblack) had kept it in absolutely pristine condition!

Well today FIAT UK telephoned me to let me know that they would reimburse me the full amount I had expended... including the Small Claims Court fee!

I think that it was the summons and my extensive description of the events that prompted them to elevate it to someone other than the monkeys who has written to me before citing irrelevant issues in FIAT's defence.

Anyhow, I am now back to square one, although happily not out of pocket. At least FIAT Group haven't definitely lost a customer although said customer will certainly be a lot warier. ;)

If you by ack to square 1 means you're still looking for the engine S/N it is stamped on an upward facing lug on the block under the omega shaped upper radiator hose. If possible to read at all it will become easier if removing the hose.
